AC girls, Tensas done at Overall

CLINTON &8212; Here&8217;s the problem many teams run into once it comes time for the MPSA Overall tournament &8212; dead legs.
The Monday start on the heels of playing games Friday and Saturday can come too soon for those who aren&8217;t deep on the bench, and both Adams Christian and Tensas Academy fell victim to that a bit.
The Lady Rebels lost to Oak Hill 32-31 after Tensas dropped the opening game of the tournament to Columbia, 47-41.
But with ACCS (28-9), the game didn&8217;t put a damper on what was a season to remember &8212; a first trip to Overall in school history along with a first appearance in the state championship game.
And the last game as head coach for John R. Gray.
&8220;They played hard, but we couldn&8217;t get anything going offensively,&8221; Gray said. &8220;I&8217;m real proud of the season they had. They made a great run. I appreciate all the support we had, the kids and the year we had. It&8217;s been a record year for the girls&8217; program at Adams Christian. I doubt they&8217;ve ever won 28 games before, either.&8221;
Both teams struggled from the field, but Adams Christian had chances at the end that could have changed the outcome. The Lady Rebels missed a layup, the front end of a one-and-one and a last shot at the buzzer.
AC hit just 14 of 44 shots from the field and had 19 turnovers. Oak Hill didn&8217;t do any better by hitting 13 of 55 shots but while turning it over only 10 times.
&8220;They out-rebounded us, and they weren&8217;t any bigger than us, either,&8221; Gray said. &8220;The thing that really hurt was we got dead-legged in the fourth quarter. We just didn&8217;t have the energy. But if we would have won it, it would have been hard to come back tomorrow. If you&8217;re lucky enough to sub out three and four, it doesn&8217;t kill you like it does us.&8221;
Ariana DeLaSalle led AC with 13 points.
Columbia Academy 47, Tensas Academy 41
The Lady Chiefs are not as deep as Adams Christian, and they came into the contest with more games played last week. Credit them for making things interesting and trimming the deficit to 42-40 in the fourth, but they had to foul from there.
And Tensas scored only one point from there.
&8220;We just don&8217;t have any more energy,&8221; Tensas head coach Chuck Bauerle said. &8220;That was it. That was our fifth game in seven days. But it was fun. The girls enjoyed it. They were disappointed we didn&8217;t win. We&8217;re capable of beating them, but they played well. Columbia has a good team.&8221;
Tensas also shot poorly from the floor by hitting only 16 of 66 shots. The Lady Chiefs (30-7) were down 31-21 at half before bouncing back in the third with a 13-6 advantage to trim the deficit to 37-34 heading into the fourth.
