NATCHEZ — She may only be a junior, but Natchez High School point guard Keyana Miller tries to mimic the seniors in the arena of leadership, she said.

Miller said she did her best to serve as an example to the rest of her teammates, since she didn’t want to seem like a hypocrite.

“I try to do what I’m supposed, run what I’m supposed to and listen to the coaches and stuff like that,” Miller said.

“Leading by example is very important, because if you tell someone to do something and you’re not doing it, they’ll say, ‘How can she tell me what to do?’”

And since she’s in charge of running the offense at the point guard position, Miller said she has to have a good reputation with her teammates, since she’s the one giving orders.

“You’re basically a leader on the floor,” Miller said. “It’s very important, because you’re keeping everyone else together, making sure they run the plays right and doing what they’re supposed to do.”

Miller said she both likes to make assists and score, depending on the situation. She said she’ll get onto her teammates if they don’t run the correct play, but she never loses her temper.

“If they run it, it’s good, but sometimes they don’t, and you have to let them know they need to run it,” Miller said. “I never yell, though.”

Miller currently has a 3.3 grade-point average and is scheduled to take the ACT Saturday. She said all of her teachers are good at helping her with her studies, especially her pre-calculus teacher, NHS head football coach Lance Reed.

“He does tutoring for his class, and he doesn’t get paid for it,” Miller said. “It’s mainly 11th graders in his class, so we’re not as experienced in math as the 12th graders, so I think he does it to help his students out as much as he can.”

But Miller said math is her least favorite subject, while her favorite subject is history.

“I love learning all of the things I never knew before about U.S. history and world history,” Miller said.

Miller said she finds the Holocaust and World War II especially fascinating.

“It’s a gruesome thing to me,” Miller said. “Hitler was in charge, but the way he got to be in charge (was awful). He demanded (killing the Jews), and the way he did it was a very gruesome thing.”

The Lady Bulldogs’ season ended Tuesday with a loss to Brandon High School in the Region 6-6A tournament. During the season, Robert Lewis Middle School coach Willie Woods replaced head coach Sue Johnson for unspecified reasons. While the change was abrupt, Miller said the players adjusted relatively smoothly.

“Since he was our coach in middle school, most of us played for him in middle school, so we didn’t have to adjust as much,” Miller said. “I think if we had gotten a brand new coach, it would have been different, but since we knew him, we adjusted well.”

Miller said she’s unsure where she wants to attend college, but she’s considering either going into psychology or physical therapy.
