VIDALIA &8212; A lunchtime accident sent one woman to the hospital and had police seeking eyewitnesses to help determine who was at fault.
Patty McCarty was stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection of Carter and Nichols Streets. After starting across the intersection, her Geo Metro was hit forward of the driver&8217;s side door by the turning pickup of Ben Morris.
Morris, a student at Vidalia High School, was leaving the school and making a left onto Carter Street.
The collision redirected McCarty&8217;s car off Carter Street and onto a fire hydrant at the corner of Nicholls and Carter.
McCarty was conscious while paramedics lifted her from the car and placed her on a backboard. She was taken to Natchez Regional Hospital.
Hospital spokesperson Kay Ketchings said McCarty was treated and released.
An eyewitness who was traveling the opposite direction on Carter Street said Morris&8217; Dodge Dakota truck ran the light.
&8220;We were stopped at the light and it had just turned green,&8221; Amber Hinson Jordan said. &8220;A red pickup ran the light and hit her.&8221;
Both McCarty and Morris were the only passengers in their vehicles. They were wearing seat belts.
Vidalia Police Department Sgt. Ronnie Wedgeworth and Sgt. Arthur Lewis responded to the call.
They took statements from Jordan, Morris and Morris&8217;s father, who was following his son in a different vehicle.
Capt. Frank Webb said the statements conflicted and the best they could do for now was to put all the information in the report and let the insurance company investigate.
&8220;If we weren&8217;t there to be sure what happened and it&8217;s not just obvious what happened&8230;&8221; he said. &8220;We don&8217;t like to leave a case report open like that, but sometimes you have to.&8221;
The investigation would remain open, Webb said, in case any of the other motorists at the intersection wished to come forward and tell what they saw.
&8220;If you were a witness, please step forward,&8221; he said. &8220;We need another witness.&8221;
