NATCHEZ &8212; You may have already noticed it. This Cathedral team is different, and it may have a different way about doing things this season.

Like more stolen bases.

And members of that freshman class are stepping up in crunch time already. It&8217;s still too early to crown anyone a batting champ anywhere, but at least after Friday&8217;s 13-3 win over Bogue Chitto in five innings the Green Wave feels better about itself at the plate.

It sets up another game in Region 7-1A Monday when the Green Wave visits St. Aloysius.

&8220;That&8217;s where we&8217;re struggling at right now &8212; swinging the bats and throwing strikes,&8221; CHS head coach Craig Beesley said. &8220;We hadn&8217;t been playing normal Cathedral baseball. We&8217;ve been struggling offensively and on the mound. We&8217;ve been changing some people up and down in the lineup, and hopefully things will start coming together for Monday.&8221;

The Green Wave (2-0, 2-1) slapped nine hits in four trips to the plate, but much of the offensive output was clouded by Bogue Chitto&8217;s seven errors and two walks and a hit batsman as part of a seven-run fourth inning.

But the Wave did have some solid licks that brought around runners &8212; namely Kole Junkin&8217;s triple that got past the outfielders in left center that scored Zack Calhoun and Murphy Hinson in the third inning.

Junkin, one of three freshmen in the lineup by game&8217;s end, drove in another run in the fourth on a groundout.

&8220;That&8217;s what did it tonight &8212; our sticks,&8221; said Junkin, who also scored a run in the second. &8220;It&8217;s just kind of the way it&8217;s got to go. Somebody has got to do it. We&8217;re just pulling together as a team, and we played hard tonight. Monday is the game. We&8217;ve got to step up &8212; it&8217;s St. Al.&8221;

Junkin, Preston Edwards and Daniel Jenkins came up big at certain points to push runs across, and it didn&8217;t take long for coaches to realize the three freshmen could contribute quickly.

Edwards entered the game in the third inning and delivered run-scoring singles in the third and fourth innings, while Jenkins came on as a pinch-hitter in the fourth and got Zack Calhoun home on a groundout to second.

The three were batting 7, 8 and 9 in the lineup by game&8217;s end. The top four batters in the lineup finished with two runs batted in.

&8220;We&8217;ve been trying to get them in the game,&8221; Beesley said. &8220;Kole has been swinging the bat real well, and Preston came in and had two RBI singles tonight. Those are three good athletes in there. We&8217;re trying to work them in as much as we can. I didn&8217;t want to throw them in there in the beginning of the year, but in the back of my mind I knew they could swing it well.&8221;

That bottom half came up big to score seven and send everyone home early after the Bobcats (0-2, 0-3) went down in order in the top half of the fifth against reliever Charlie Lane. The Bobcats stuck with pitcher Cory Washington, who didn&8217;t walk a batter until walking Lane a batter into the fourth.

Two errors helped the Green Wave&8217;s cause in that inning, including an error off the bat of David Ozburn that scored Braxton Fondren and Lane.

&8220;When you&8217;re giving up seven errors a ball game, you can expect to get beat,&8221; BC head coach Adam Moak said. &8220;I don&8217;t know how many walks we had, but we had enough to get beat. Our pitcher pitched a good game. He threw strikes. It&8217;s still early, but excuses are excuses, you know?&8221;

Calhoun had a big shot in that inning when he doubled to move Ozburn to third.
