Hounds put away River Oaks in five; Rams roll

MONROE, La. &8212; With the umpiring crew arriving late and River Oaks&8217; park not having any lights, both teams were in a tight spot as far as finishing the game before darkness.

Huntington&8217;s bats took care of that.

Two runs in the first inning precluded a nine-run second as the Hounds needed only five innings to get a 14-4 win over River Oaks to beat darkness and get the game in. Trey Corbett slammed a two-run homer in the first, and Huntington left-hander overcame a sluggish start to get the win.

&8220;This was the first ball game we were able to put a lot of things together,&8221; Huntington head coach Mitch Ashmore said. &8220;I don&8217;t think Brasher had his best outing, and he&8217;d be the first to tell you he wasn&8217;t as sharp as he has been. But we swung the bats and hit it well. A win is a win, and you&8217;ve got to be able to pitch sometimes when you don&8217;t have your best stuff.&8221;

Corbett parked the homer in the first off River Oaks starter Sam Herman with Richard Steele on base for the quick lead. The floodgates then opened in the second as Brasher singled in two runs, Landon Willard and Antonio Jordan &8212; making his first start in left field &8212; had key hits and the Mustangs dropped three balls in a slippery outfield that allowed the Hounds to plate more runs.

&8220;Landon swung the bat well,&8221; Ashmore said. &8220;He&8217;s been swinging the bat a lot better for us lately. He had the home run against Briarfield, and I talk about how we can&8217;t swing for much power and we have home runs in back-to-back games. Tony Jordan swung the bat well for us and made a couple of nice catches in the outfield.

WOODVILLE &8212; Take 10 walks, two hit batters and four errors and mix them together, and you&8217;ve got a one-sided ball game that doesn&8217;t go past four innings.

The WCCA Rams (3-0, 5-6) know things will get tougher next week when they travel to Amite School Center. But on Wednesday, they got the District 6-A contest with Lamar over quickly with three in the second and third innings and five in the fourth.

Collin Dor/ doubled in Lane McCarty and John Ott, and Cody Cullen doubled in Joseph Landry after Dor/ was thrown out trying to get to third.

Blake Fontenot got the win after he started and pitched the first inning. The Rams changed pitchers after each inning with Dor/ striking out the side in the second, Landry fanning two in the third and Cory Ellis retiring the side in order in the fourth.
