COLUMBIA &8212; Centreville scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 9-9 score and the Tigers held on to defeat the Columbia Academy Cougars 18-12 Tuesday night.
The win was crucial for Centreville&8217;s playoff hopes. The win left the Tigers (7-5, 11-9) just a half-game back of Columbia Academy for the No. 2 spot in District 4-AA.
Which now means a win by Trinity Episcopal over the Cougars on Friday night would leave both teams at 7-5 in district play, but the Tigers would get in the Class AA South State playoffs as the district&8217;s runner-up by winning the tiebreaker.
Columbia scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning and had an 8-3 lead after three innings of play. But Centreville answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and four in the top of the sixth to take a 9-8 lead.
The Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 9-9 before the Tigers exploded for nine runs in the top of the seventh.
Columbia scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not nearly enough and the Cougars now have to win on Friday or they are out and Centreville is in.
Trinity Episcopal 13, Copiah 3
NATCHEZ &8212; The Saints didn&8217;t let a three-run rally in the top of the fourth affect them as they responded by scoring 11 runs in the final three innings to put away the Colonels in six innings.
Trinity (9-9) led 2-0 after three innings, but Copiah took a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. That&8217;s when the Saints&8217; offense took over by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good, five in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth to 10-run rule the Colonels.
The Saints had only two-extra base hits among their nine hits &8212; doubles by Matthew Freeman and Clint Easom &8212; but they also took advantage of five errors by Copiah.
Parklane 8, Adams Christian 5
McCOMB &8212; The Pioneers may have dropped out of the MPSA Top 5 poll, but they let everyone in Class AAA know that they will be a team to be reckoned with in the playoffs after a big win over the Class AA and No. 3 Rebels.
Parklane (17-6) was also looking to avenge a 10-4 loss to Adams Christian (20-3) on April 1 and the Pioneers did just that, ending the Rebels&8217; 19-game winning streak. Coming into this game, Parklane was just 4-3 in the month of April and the Pioneers needed this game to have some momentum heading down the home stretch.
The Rebels, however, didn&8217;t score off winning pitcher Brantley Ray until the fourth inning after trailing 4-0. They also hurt themselves by committing an uncharacteristic six errors.
Parklane put the game away by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth, led by Tyler Cunningham&8217;s two-run home run and Eric Boyd&8217;s RBI double.
C.J. Wright, who led ACCS at the plate by going 3-for-4, hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth.
