Boys roundups: Whitley leads Vidalia High past Jena

VIDALIA — Michael Whitley led Vidalia with a game-high 14 points and Isiah Thompson had 12 points as the Vikings rolled to a 75-24 win over the Jena Giants in an LHSAA District 3-3A game Tuesday night.

From the opening tip to the final buzzer, Vidalia dominated Jena on both ends of the court. The first quarter was a clear indication of what kind of game this was going to be as the Vikings forced several turnovers that they converted into easy transition baskets. By the time the quarters was finally over, Vidalia had a commanding 30-4 lead. By halftime, the Vikings led the Giants 45-6.

Zalon Parker added 11 points for Vidalia (2-5 in District 3-3A). The Vikings play host to Buckeye for their Sweetheart Game Friday night.

Ferriday 54, Lake Providence 39

FERRIDAY — Charles Chandler finished with a game-high 20 points and Richard Jefferson added 14 points as the Ferriday Trojans got past the Lake Providence Panthers in LHSAA District 2-2A action Tuesday night.

The second quarter was the turning point as Ferriday turned an 11-8 lead after one quarter of play into a 28-14 halftime lead. In the second half, the Trojans made sure that the Panthers would not go on a big rally to get back in the game.

Joe Sanders led Lake Providence with 17 points and A.J. Bruce had 10 points. Brandon Scott chipped in with eight points for Ferriday (10-9, 2-5), which hosts Homer for Senior Night on Friday night.

Wilkinson County 68, Jefferson County 64

WOODVILLE — Phillip Fountain scored 22 points and Devin Voorhies was right behind him with 21 points as the Wilkinson County Wildcats stunned the Jefferson County Tigers in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game Tuesday night.

Jefferson County appeared to be in control of the game with a 33-27 lead at halftime. But Wilkinson County took the momentum away from the Tigers with a 19-10 advantage in the third quarter for a 46-43 lead. The Tigers were unable to make enough defensive stops in the fourth quarter and were outscored by the Wildcats 22-21.

Dalvin Johnson led Jefferson County (6-3 in Region 7-3A) with a game-high 24 points and Jarnell Anderson had 13 points. The Tigers host Franklin County Friday night. Wilkinson County (5-18, 2-7) hosts Prentiss Friday night.

Piney Woods 73, Cathedral 50

PINEY WOODS — Phillip Jones led four Piney Woods players in double figures with a game-high 29 points as the Tornadoes, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, defeated the Cathedral Green Wave in MHSAA Region 7-1A action Tuesday night.

Piney Woods jumped out to a 25-12 lead after one quarter of play and by halftime led Cathedral 33-17. The Tornadoes then outscored the Green Wave 26-14 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Kenneth Taylor scored 14 points for Piney Woods (11-9, 8-1). Carl Hammitte had 12 points and Jamon Gray added 10 points for Cathedral (13-12, 3-6), which plays host to Bogue Chitto Friday night.

Block 70, LaSalle 28

JONESVILLE — Dorian Bowman led Block with a game-high 15 points as the Bears annihilated the LaSalle Tigers Tuesday night in LHSAA District 4-1A play.

Block had its way with LaSalle in the first half en route to a 35-9 lead at the half. Trevor Vault finished with 11 points and Jahmal Macklin added 10 points for the Bears (6-12, 3-2), who host Montgomery Friday night.

Hazlehurst 58, Franklin County 47

MEADVILLE — After an back-and-forth first half resulted in Franklin County taking a 21-19 halftime lead, Hazlehurst took over in the second half as the Indians defeated the Bulldogs in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game Tuesday night.

Led by Thaddeus Edwards and Trojuan White, Hazlehurst outscored Franklin County 20-13 in the third quarter for a 39-34 lead. And any thoughts of the Bulldogs going on a run in the fourth quarter would not take place as the Indians outscored them 19-13. Edwards led all scorers with 21 points and White had 11 points.

Franklin County (3-14, 2-7) was led by Antonio Green with 10 points and Keran Mason with nine points. Fred Coleman and Fred Nelson added eight points each for the Bulldogs, who play at Jefferson County Friday night.
