NATCHEZ &8212; A design for the new home of Natchez eatery Fat Mama&8217;s Tamales won approval from the Natchez Preservation Commission Wednesday.

Natchez architect Johnny Waycaster designed the gabled wood-frame building that will occupy a portion of the southeast corner at Canal and Washington streets.

Waycaster said a 6-foot fence will run along the east side of the property. &8220;There will be shrubbery along the fence.&8221;

The location of Fat Mama&8217;s, which is moving from its location further south on Canal Street at D.A. Biglane, recently was the subject of controversy over city zone changes made to facilitate the relocation.

A group of 20 residents in the nearby Washington Street neighborhood filed suit against the mayor and board of aldermen in December, stating the zoning changes were not made in accordance with the city ordinances.

On March 28, Circuit Judge Forrest &8220;Al&8221; Johnson ruled in favor of the city, upholding the zone change.

Mimi Miller, one of the 20 contesting the zoning change, attended the meeting and complimented Waycaster on the design during the public comment period.

&8220;The design is a good design that fits into the character of the historic district,&8221; Miller said.

None of the group contesting the zone change will comment on whether they have decided to appeal Johnson&8217;s ruling to the Mississippi Supreme Court. Attempts to reach their attorney, Bruce Kuehnle, were unsuccessful Wednesday evening.

Fat Mama&8217;s is moving from the 1940s log cabin that stands on property that will be part of the Natchez National Historical Park Fort Rosalie site.
