VIDALIA &8212; The thunderstorm that rumbled through the Miss-Lou early Wednesday claimed one casualty.

Today&8217;s Vidalia playoff baseball contest.

The Vikings&8217; field couldn&8217;t dry out well enough Wednesday, and it forced them to push back their game a day with Jonesboro-Hodge. The Class 2A bi-district playoff game will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, but Monterey and Block remain on as scheduled as of Wednesday evening.

Block will play at Mangham at 6 p.m. Monterey will host Evans at 3 p.m.

&8220;We&8217;ve got water standing,&8221; VHS head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. &8220;I&8217;ve dug ditches to try and drain it off. Better safe than sorry &8212; we&8217;re going to go ahead and push it to Friday. I&8217;m not sure that field will dry. The infield is just low, and we need some dirt to build it up.&8221;

The Vikings will wait a day to play the Tigers, and it&8217;ll give everyone a chance to get get in any extra scouting and preparation for the contest. It&8217;s the same first-round opponent from two years ago when the Vikings opened with a win at home.

J-H enters the playoffs as a wild card after finishing third in its district behind Sterlington and Ouachita Christian.

&8220;They&8217;re in a tough district up there,&8221; Hoffpauir said. &8220;Those two teams were in the finals last year. They actually came real close to beating Sterlington a couple of times this year. They&8217;ve got two big kids that throw very hard. I just hope we see the ball.&8221;

Yet it&8217;s another appearance in the postseason in a long string of them under Hpffpauir. But this one may be different from any of recent memory &8212; the Vikings don&8217;t really have that one star player to lean on but surprised some folks by doing as well as they did this season.

Defense has been shaky at times, but the Vikings have been for the most part consistent at the plate. Will Thomas will likely get the start on the mound Friday.

&8220;It&8217;s been the story of the season,&8221; Hoffpauir said. &8220;After two weeks of the season, I wouldn&8217;t have given you a nickel if we&8217;d go .500. I told the guys at the first practice, &8216;If you practice hard, good things will happen.&8217; And they have. We&8217;ve pulled off quality wins, but we have lost games we shouldn&8217;t have lost.

&8220;But anything can happen in our 32-team format. A whole new season is starting. Give ourselves a chance to win &8212; that&8217;s our philosophy.&8221;

Evans at Monterey

MONTEREY &8212; The Wolves are in as the second-place team from District 3-B, and as of late Wednesday they&8217;d have a chance to see what they could do in the playoffs today.

Head coach Hank Zizzi said he&8217;ll make a final decision this morning.

&8220;There have been several times when I said there&8217;s no way we&8217;d be able to play and Chuck (Metcalf) got it ready,&8221; Zizzi said. &8220;It didn&8217;t look too good. I want to say it didn&8217;t look too bad, but I can&8217;t lie.&8221;

The Wolves are back in the playoffs and will get the Eagles, the No. 3 team out of District 5. For a being a young team as the Wolves are, Zizzi hopes a taste of the playoffs will make a difference down the road.

A win would put them likely up against Choudrant, a powerhouse in Class B.

&8220;I&8217;ve always felt this way &8212; if we go out there and play our game, we&8217;ll do all right,&8221; he said.

Block at Mangham

JONESVILLE &8212; In the new district, maybe some folks wouldn&8217;t have predicted the Bears to get into the playoffs.

But here they are as the No. 3 team out of their district. And the assignment is a tough Mangham team that&8217;s deep in pitching with Adam Romero hitting close to 90 on the gun and left-hander Mason Free just the opposite as a junkballer.

&8220;They have beaten high-dollar opponents,&8221; BHS head coach Scott Green said. &8220;They don&8217;t hit the ball that well and don&8217;t score a lot of runs, but they don&8217;t give up anything. The (Matt) Shively kid from Monterey at times is pretty hard. I don&8217;t think anybody we&8217;e seen throws as hard as Romero.&8221;
