VIDALIA &8212; Led by the pitching of Brian Colson and some timely hitting, the Northeast All-Stars shutout the East Central All-Stars 11-0 in Saturday at the Dixie Majors 15-16-year-old All-Star District Tournament at the Vidalia High baseball field.
Northeast will take on Morehouse, a 6-4 winner over Franklin Parish in the first game of the evening, today at 8 p.m., while East Central will go up against Franklin Parish at 6 p.m.
After Josh Absher hit a one-out single to left field and stole second base, Colson helped his own cause by sending East Central pitcher Lannie Bass&8217;s 1-2 pitch over the fence in left field to give Northeast, made up of players from the Rayville area, a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
After a two-out single right back up the middle by Josh Johnson, Bass finally got out of the inning with no more damage by striking out Jake Jackson.
The East Central All-Stars, made up of players from Concordia, Catahoula and Tensas parishes, did not get off to that good of a start.
In the bottom of the first, Colson struck out Hunter Martin, Beau Dougthy and Tyler Pere &8212; all on three-two counts. Martin and Doughty struck out swinging and Pere struck out looking.
Josh Wilson led off the top of the second for Northeast with a single to centerfield, went to second on an error when right fielder Raymond Ames dropped Tyler Ogden&8217;s fly ball, and scored on a two-out double by Absher for a 3-0 lead.
However, Northeast was not able to put any more runs on the board as Bass got Colson to ground out to third base.
Bass led off the bottom of the second with a single to left field and past a diving attempt by third baseman Wilson, went to second on a passed ball and third on a ground out by Josh Temple.
But after Tyler Hancock went to first after being hit by a pitch, Jon Lipsey struck out looking and Hancock was tagged out trying to steal second by shortstop Johnson to end the rally and the inning.
Bass finally held Northeast without a run and he gave up only a two-out single by Jackson in the top of the third.
East Central had the chance to score on Colson in the bottom of the third as Ames led off with a single to left field, went to second on a passed ball, and Jarred Ensminger walked on a 3-2 count.
But Colson somehow got out of the inning unscathed.
After he struck out Martin and Doughty, he walked Pere to load the bases, but struck out Bass looking for his seventh strikeout of the game.
