MAGEE &8212; In a tight game, it is the little things that matter most.

The Natchez Dixie Youth Major League All-Stars learned that lesson the hard way as they lost Monday to Petal 7-6 in extra innings, after surrendering a 2-0 first inning lead.

&8220;We played good as a whole, but just couldn&8217;t seem to do the little things right,&8221; Natchez coach Boo Brumfield said. &8220;We put ourselves in the hole early, came back, but made an error or two that cost us in the end.&8221;

Jake Brumfield got Natchez on the scoreboard first after his two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning brought in Christopher Perry.

The errors Brumfield spoke of came in the eighth inning, when the Natchez made a pair of errors that eventually led to the game-winning run which came off of a walk.

Call it irony that Petal&8217;s game-winning run was scored by Trevor Williams, a former Natchez resident, who moved to Petal last year.

But the final inning was not where the game was lost.

Natchez set itself back in the second inning, as they gave up six runs off of three walks and five hits.

In the fourth inning Natchez brought the game back within reach after a pair of home runs scored three runs.

Trailing 6-5 in the sixth inning, and with the bases loaded with two outs, Jake Brumfield hit an RBI single, which tied the game. Unfortunately, the go ahead run was thrown out at third base during the play.

Natchez

now faces an elimination game tonight at 8 against Yazoo City, who lost in their first game to Moss Point, but staved off elimination Monday by defeating Cleveland.
