VIDALIA &8212; For most, Sunday afternoons are a time of leisure, or at the very most a time of yard work.
For the Miss-Lou Vipers, a travel team which will compete in the Governor&8217;s Cup baseball tournament in Vicksburg this weekend, Sunday was a time to get in some practice.
The Vipers, with players from Natchez, Vidalia and through-out the Miss-Lou, got together with another travel squad for a practice game.
&8220;They&8217;re going to the tournament, too,&8221; said Viper coach Gary Paul Parnham. &8220;They called us and asked if we&8217;d like to scrimmage, and we said sure because it had been seven or eight days since we&8217;d played after the world series. It gave us a chance to hit some, it gave our pitchers some innings and it made us better.&8221;
The Vipers competed in the USSSA World Series last week, where they finished in fifth place.
&8220;We did pretty well for our first year together,&8221; Parnham said. &8220;We lost by one run in the last inning to the team that finished second in the whole thing. We also had some team and individual competitions. We finished third as a team in Around the Horn and Cameron Boyette finished first in a running competition.&8221;
Parnham said the Governor&8217;s Cup was a good way to finish out the summer.
&8220;It&8217;s always the last tournament of the summer,&8221; he said. &8220;It&8217;s a good way to close out the year. Most of these boys have been playing together since Dixie Youth, and they&8217;re playing in high school, too. We&8217;ve had them out here since May, and it&8217;s been great. We&8217;re already making plans for next summer.&8221;
