NATCHEZ &8212; Time ran out on the Alpha A&8217;s in their T.M. Jennings Senior League playoff game with the Natchez Community team, and none too soon.
The A&8217;s, already trailing 6-1, were playing shorthanded after an injury to their catcher, leaving eight players in the field to finish the game.
Natchez Community took the 6-1 win after the time limit expired on the game.
It was a contest which Natchez Community took control of from the get-go, hopping out of the gates 3-0 when Kendall Logan, Desmond Small and DeShawn Griggs all got base hits and scored. This came on the heels of an unbelievable defensive play by Willie Newman in the top half of the first inning, when he ran nearly 50 yards and jumped to catch a ball in mid-air for the very first out of the game.
Natchez Community head coach Gene Banks said Newman&8217;s catch set the tempo.
&8220;After Willie New caught that ball on the run, I knew these boys had come to play,&8221; he said. &8220;I knew they had come to win. I really think his defense turned the game around.&8221;
The A&8217;s struck back in the second when Trey Barnes singled, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch.
They would get no closer, as Cody Barber of Natchez Community scored in similar fashion in the bottom of the inning to give them a 4-1 advantage.
A scary moment occurred in the third inning when Alpha A&8217;s catcher Keenen McCallister took a foul ball to the collarbone, knocking him backwards and leaving him flat on his back for several minutes. McCallister left the field under his own power, but no word was available on his condition Monday night.
With McCallister out, the A&8217;s were forced to play shorthanded, and Natchez Community took full advantage, scoring two more runs to take a 6-1 lead. The game was called after the top of the fourth due to the time limit.
Logan took the win on the mound for Natchez Community, while Barnes took the loss for the Alpha A&8217;s.
Banks said Logan&8217;s performance gave him great confidence.
&8220;I knew once Kendall Logan got through the first and looked as good as he did that we&8217;d have a good chance,&8221; he said. &8220;I knew we were playing as a team. It&8217;s just a good bunch of boys. We played .500 ball all year but now we&8217;re getting things going. It was hot out here tonight, but the way these guys played I didn&8217;t do too much sweating.&8221;
Lorman A&8217;s 11, Ransom Construction 2
In the second game of the night, the Lorman A&8217;s took it to Ransom Construction with an 11-2 win to set themselves up for a match with Natchez Community tonight at 7.
Dee Graves took the win on the mound, and Wesley Pendleton took the loss for Ransom.
Javon Washington of Ransom led all batters, batting 2-for-2 with a double.
