NATCHEZ &8212; A woman flew
about 20 feet from her car into a ravine when her SUV collided with another vehicle
at about 3:20 p.m. Friday.
Dominique N. Nicholson, 18, was transported to Natchez Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released around 8 p.m., hospital officials said.
Nicholson was driving down D&8217;Evereux Drive when a car turned in front of her, police said. Her car flipped five times, throwing her out the window.
Carrie Fleming, 58, 54 South Concord Ave., was driving a 1996 green Mazda Prot/g/. She was traveling north on D&8217;Evereux Drive. She turned left onto Concord Avenue and failed to yield the right of way to southbound traffic, Natchez Police Department Patrolman Danny Barber said Friday.
Nicholson, 108 Miami Court, was driving a black 1993 Chevrolet Blazer, headed southbound. Nicholson hit Fleming&8217;s car and flipped five times over a distance of 120 feet, Barber said. She was not wearing a seat belt and was flung into the ravine next to the road.
Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said an ambulance crew had help from 10 bystanders carrying the woman up the embankment. The woman was conscious and moving when she was transported to the hospital by ambulance, Mullins said.
Fleming, the driver of the Prot/g/, walked away from the wreck and left with a friend, Mullins said. Barber said Fleming failed to yield the right-of-way. No arrests were made and no citations were issued, he said.
Walter J. Squalls, a retired Natchez police captain, was driving behind the Blazer.
&8220;The most frustrating thing is, people don&8217;t wear their seat belts,&8221; Squalls said Friday. &8220;If she had had her seat belt on, she&8217;d have been with the vehicle.&8221;
