NATCHEZ — Locals looking to pick up some healthy hobbies have a couple of great options to get started this weekend.
Anyone looking for a reboot of their body and mind should consider a yoga workshop this weekend at Natchez Yoga Studio.
The “Upgrade your system ‘soulware’” workshops from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday will feature award-winning guest instructor Cat McCarthy.
“If you’ve never done yoga, are just starting or have been practicing for years — you’ll learn something,” Natchez Yoga instructor Danielle Craft said.
Friday’s class, for $40, will focus on poses. Saturday’s 10 a.m. class, for $45, will focus on heart-openers and backbends. And Saturday’s 3 p.m. class, also for $45, will focus on hip openers and arm balances.
The cost of attending all three sessions will be $130.
Craft said the workshop is a great opportunity for anyone eager to give yoga a try and for those with experience to enjoy some variety.
Craft said she also looks forward to playing the role of student to McCarthy, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, New Orleans resident and certified Anusara yoga instructor.
Interested residents can register by calling 601-446-9599 or by registering before class. Natchez Yoga is located 513 Main St., upstairs behind the Bass Pecan Company.
Jewelry workshop
Locals in the market for an accessory makeover or a new hobby should check out a jewelry-making workshop this weekend at ArtsNatchez gallery.
Robin Person will teach the class from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at 425 Main St., for $25.
“It’s a fun type of artistic thing to learn how to do, and you get great jewelry as a result of it,” Person said.
All of the supplies will be provided, Person said, which will include semiprecious stones, pearls, resin, toggles, chains and other tools.
Participants can make jewelry fancy enough for cocktail hour or casual enough for the workplace.
“It kind of depends on what you make of it,” Person said.
After attending the workshop, participants should be armed with knowledge to make their own jewelry at home, Person said.
Person said the workshop is open to anyone older than 13, and no skills are required to sign up. She also suggested bringing reading glasses to the workshop.
Call Person at 662-515-0490 or e-mail rsperson@bellsouth.net for information or to register by 5 p.m. Saturday.
Also this weekend, the Krewe of Phoenix call out ball will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the City Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for invited, non-krewe members.
The Nubian Social Aid and Pleasure Club ball will be at 8 p.m. at the Natchez Convention Center.
