vidalia &8212; Vidalia&8217;s new Wal-Mart Supercenter is scheduled to open Nov. 8, Mayor Hyram Copeland said Friday.
&8220;I think it&8217;s going to be great welcoming a new corporate citizen that will be working in Vidalia,&8221; Copeland said.
Wal-Mart&8217;s plans to build in Vidalia became known in January of 2006.
Construction of the Supercenter on U.S. 84/65 began in spring of 2006.
During the recruiting process the City
of Vidalia offered the store a $1.3 million savings on its electric rates over 10 years as an economic incentive to locate in town.
Wal-Mart paid just over $909,000 for about 25 acres of land in February.
Copeland said Friday the Wal-Mart in Vidalia offered the 80 employees that are working at the Wal-Mart building in Ferriday an opportunity to transfer, plus it will offer 120 more jobs to citizens in the Miss-Lou.
Copeland also said he predicted sales tax revenues from the new business will generate over $6,000 per year for Vidalia.
Ferriday Mayor Gene Allen said he was not sure what would happen to the Wal-Mart in his town when the Vidalia store opens.
&8220;There is still a for-sale sign out in front of the building and that&8217;s all I know,&8221; Allen said.
