PEARL — With a runner on second the tying run at the plate,Matt Tracy struck out three Bulldog batters to pick up his first save as No. 11 Ole Miss (20-6) defeated Mississippi State (14-11) by a score of 5-3 to win the Governor’s Cup for a second straight season.

David Goforth (1-1) picked up the win in his first career start, working a career-long 5.2 innings and holding Mississippi State to two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. The two runs came on a home run from Bulldog first baseman Connor Powers in the sixth inning.

Matt Tracy then picked up the save with his performance in the ninth as he retired all three batters faced in order — all by strikeout.

C.C. Watson (2-1) suffered the loss for Mississippi State as he allowed three runs — one earned — on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out one.

“David Goforth was terrific tonight,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “There is no doubt about his talent and level of competitiveness he has in him. He needed an outing like tonight where he could just go out and pitch. He may have looked the best I’ve ever seen him.

“Matt Tracy was just tremendous, coming in and striking out all three batters to preserve the win.”
