Lake St. John &8212; Maggie Ulmer, Sarah Beth Willard and Ashley Sandel knew it was the last day of summer.
So the trio tried to cram as much fun as possible
into their Labor Day holiday. Just ask 5-year-old Maggie.
&8220;There&8217;s tubing, skiing, swimming and eating,&8221; Maggie said on the Willards&8217; porch overlooking the lake.
Their parents knew it was the last day of summer too. There was the fun, certainly.
But there was also the packing up summer toys and preparing for fall.
And while it was not the official last day of summer, Labor Day would be the last long weekend of fun for a while.
&8220;It is the end of summer for us,&8221; Sara Beth&8217;s mother Selah said on the family porch. &8220;It turns into the busy season for us.&8221;
&8220;We usually go to the hunting camp after Labor Day,&8221; Selah said.
Sara Beth, Maggie and Ashley also knew that tomorrow meant a long stretch of school days before fall break.
&8220;All our teachers say we don&8217;t get serious until after Labor Day,&8221; Sara Beth said.
&8220;With all the homework, it&8217;s a readjustment for the parents as well as the kids,&8221; Selah said.
As the children were busy bouncing from one activity to the other, the Willards were preparing to leave for fall.
Jim Willard, Sara Beth&8217;s father, dragged the inner tube down the pier and up the hill to be stored away. Then he went to giving the lawn one final cut before going home.
&8220;This is probably our last weekend up here for while,&8221; Jim said.
