Ward, Rabenhorst rally for win

NATCHEZ &8212; None of the nine teams in the championship flight would have expected the outcome of the 2006 Coca-Cola Four Ball Tournament at Beau Pr/ Country Club to turn out the way it did.
Certainly not Lew Ward and Scott Rabenhorst, who teamed up to shoot a final-round, five-under-par 67 Sunday afternoon as they rallied from a two-shot deficit for the win with a two-day score of 13-under-par 131.
&8220;We&8217;re shocked,&8221; Ward said. &8220;The course was tougher with the tees back. For 36 holes, we had only one bogey.&8221;
&8220;Surprised,&8221; Rabenhorst said. &8220;We played consistently. There are some holes where you feel like you can make a putt. But we played well.&8221;
Ward and Rabenhorst had six birdies and a bogey on the par-four 12th hole in their final round as they waited anxiously to find out how the final two groups would fare.
Jason Rooks and Wesley Rogers didn&8217;t play as well as they did on Saturday. After firing a 63, they managed to shoot three-under to finish one shot back at 12-under 132.
&8220;Just never got a putt to fall until it was too late,&8221; Rooks said. &8220;We both hit the ball well. We had a lot of putts that looked at the hole but didn&8217;t fall. Some days you have good putts that don&8217;t go in. Just too bad it was today.&8221;
Rooks and Rogers had four birdies and one bogey that eventually cost them a playoff with Ward and Rabenhorst. But as Rooks put it, they didn&8217;t make enough birdies to give them an opportunity for the win.
Dwayne and Dean Brown shot a final-round, 6-under 66, the lowest round of the day in the championship flight, to finish at 11-under 133.
That was good enough for a tie for third with Tom Matthews and C.C. Barnes, whose 5-under 67 put them at the same two-day score.
&8220;We played better than we did yesterday,&8221; Dwayne Brown said. &8220;In one stretch we made six birdies in eight holes. We hit it better today. Just kind of held it together until we got some putts to fall.&8221;
The Browns had the clubhouse lead for about an hour and Dwayne Brown said he was hopeful their team would win, but it was not meant to be.
