RIDGELAND &8212; Five errors, eight runners left on base and two Alyssa Cummins home runs were too much for the Lady Hounds of Huntington to overcome in an 8-0 opening round loss to Bayou Academy in the MPSA Fast-Pitch State Tournament.

The Lady Hounds, who qualified for the Class A tournament by virtue of their fourth-place finish at South State last weekend, managed only two hits on the day.

Julie Moak took the loss at pitcher.

Opportunities for the win were there, however, for Huntington; as they opened the game by drawing two walks only to strand both runners.

Bayou then scored on an error and then on Cummins&8217; first home run, a blast to center field.

The Lady Hounds got a golden opportunity to get back in the game in the second inning, as walks and Bayou errors loaded the bases, but again left the runners stranded.

Cummins struck again in the third inning with her second long ball of the game.

Following Cummins&8217; blast, the Lady Hounds seemed to lose focus, as several errors led to five more Bayou runs over the final two innings before the time limit expired.

Huntington head coach Marion Newman felt his team had lost its focus.

&8220;We lost everything,&8221; Newman said. &8220;We&8217;ve been talking to them about this all year &8212; about not quitting when you get behind. It&8217;s like when they get behind they just say &8220;It&8217;s over.&8221; I was really disappointed with how they finished this game, but I am proud of these girls for everything up to that, and for just being here.&8221;

While the final score may not have reflected it, Moak pitched a solid game on the mound, allowing only five hits, striking out one and walking three. Five Huntington errors hurt her cause.

Logan Blackmon and Whitney Pearson got the lone Lady Hounds hits.

The loss sent Huntingtoninto the loser&8217;s bracket.

Wayne Academy 6, Huntington 4

A valiant effort against the top-seeded team in Class A fell just short for the Lady Hounds in their second game of the day, Thursday.

The Lady Hounds scored three runs in the first inning, but two Wayne Academy runs in the first and three more in the second would prove to be too much.

Julie Moak batted 1-for-3 and scored two runs, while her sister, Katie Moak, batted 2-for-3. Amberlee Collard and Emilee Johns each batted 1-for-3. Johns drove in a run.

The loss ended Huntington&8217;s season.
