FERRIDAY &8212; For 31 seconds, the Tallulah Trojans had the Huntington Hounds on their heels.
After that, it was all Huntington.
The Hounds (5-0) ran every which way in destroying Tallulah 76-6 Friday night in Ferriday.
Jody Cottongin was the star of the show, rushing eight times for 183 yards and two touchdowns while also returning a punt 66 yards for a touchdown.
The Hounds opened the scoring in the first quarter when Colin Stacey took it in from 11 yards out. Josh Lee&8217;s kick was no good, giving Huntington a 6-0 lead.
When the Hounds forced Tallulah into a third-and-long situation, Trojans quarterback William Collins heaved a pass to Clayton Holmes, who caught the ball between two Huntington and ran the rest of the way for a 59-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.
Huntington head coach Chad Harkins said that was a symptom of what he felt was an overall sloppy performance.
&8220;I don&8217;t think we ever really turned things around in the first half,&8221; Harkins said. &8220;I was really disappointed with our enthusiasm and our intensity tonight. We made a lot of mental mistakes. We came back out in the second half and I left the starters in for about six minutes, and they really played a lot better.&8221;
Only 31 seconds after the Trojans tied the score, the Hounds took back the lead and then began to pour it on.
Josh Lee scored on a 49-yard run, then took in the two point conversion for a 14-6 Huntington lead.
Cottongin then topped Lee with a 50-yard score on the opening play of the second quarter. Lee added the two-point conversion, then scored on another 35-yard run three minutes later to push the lead to 30-6.
Cottongin then took in his punt return to push it to 37-6, Huntington, then scored on another 45-yard run, to give the Hounds a 44-6 halftime lead.
Stacy scored again for the Hounds on a 28-yard run early in the third quarter to put Huntington past the 50-point mark. Quarterback Terence Johnson then took another Tallulah punt 63 yards for a score.
Huntington&8217;s reserves began to trickle into the game and that point, and even managed to score three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Richard Steele, Keondric Brown and Zack Brown scored on runs of eight, 50 and 50 for the final scores of the game.
Harkins said that while he was disappointed with the team overall, he was pleased with the play of his offensive line.
&8220;They&8217;re one of the most consistent bunches we have here this season,&8221; he said. &8220;I know each week I can count on them to play together, to block the whole game and to play with consistency. They really played well tonight.&8221;
Their good play was obvious, as Huntington finished with 360 yards rushing on 31 carries as a team.
Tallulah had no such luck on the ground, netting negavite-24 yards on 22 carries, and finishing with only 109 yards of total offense.
Harkins said he hopes the Hounds will use the next two weeks to prepare for the meat of their schedule.
&8220;We&8217;ve really got to cut down on mental mistakes,&8221; he said. &8220;I&8217;m not worried about them being focused next week against Tensas, because I know they&8217;ve got a rivalry from the two years I&8217;ve been here. I saw that, and I hope we can get a lot more focused as a team.&8221;
Huntington will visit Trinity next Friday night at 7.
