Big second quarter gives Bulldogs victory

FOXWORTH &8212; After being shut out in the first quarter, the Franklin County Bulldogs scored 21 points in the second quarter en route to a 28-6 win over the West Marion Trojans in a Region 7-3A game Friday night.

Franklin County starting quarterback Jamie Collins did not play in the game after having his wisdom teeth pulled. Lee Turner took the controls and played a solid game, completing eight of 15 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0), ranked No. 2 in both the Mississippi Associated Press and Clarion-Ledger&8217;s Class 3A polls, finally got on the board when Turner connected with Mike Hunt on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 10:12 to go in the second quarter.

A Jordan Hunt nine-yard touchdown run and Turner&8217;s seven-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Tutor gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Antoine Guice scored on a 22-yard touchdown run as Franklin County took a 28-0 lead. Jace Carlock made all four of his extra points in the game.

Just when it looked the Bulldogs&8217; defense, led by Gary Rogers and Bo Tillman, was going to shut out West Marion (2-4, 0-3), the Trojans used a trick play to for their only points of the game.

Quarterback Darius Miller threw a five-yard pass to Jeremy Smith, who threw a lateral to Willie Gatlin, who ran the remaining 20 yards for a touchdown with just 1:01 left.

Alex Smith and Preston Griffith led the Bulldogs&8217; running game as they combined for 158 yards on 28 total carries. Smith had 14 carries for 93 yards and Griffith had 14 carries for 65 yards.

Crystal Springs 12,

Jefferson County 8

FAYETTE &8212; One week after scoring 42 points in a stunning 30-point win over a good Hinds AHS team, Jefferson County&8217;s offense sputtered against Crystal Springs in a key Region 6-3A game for both teams.

The visiting Tigers held the host Tigers to just six first downs and 142 yards of total offense &8212; 53 yards rushing and 89 yards passing &8212; and had two interceptions.

Crystal Springs (5-1, 3-0) maintained its lead in Region 6-3A when Latravis Wilson intercepted a Percy Turner pass as Jefferson County (3-3, 1-1) was driving down the field late in the second quarter and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown with 21 seconds left to give the visiting Tigers a 12-8 lead, which held for the rest of the game.

Marcus Norwood caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Joshua Hollins late in the first quarter to give Crystal Springs a 6-0 lead, but Jefferson County took the lead with 4:16 to go in the second quarter on Vernon Smith&8217;s four-yard scoring run and Turner&8217;s two-point conversion run.

Wilkinson County 0

WOODVILLE &8212; Wilkinson County quarterback Javarius Jenkins had a game that he would rather forget &8212; two interceptions and a fumble that were returned for touchdowns as the Wildcats remained winless on the season.

Two interception returns for touchdowns in the first quarter helped give the Eagles a 21-0 lead as they defeated the Wildcats (0-6, 0-2) to remain in the playoff hunt in Region 7-3A

South Pike (3-3, 2-1), ranked No. 12 in the Mississippi A.P. Class 3A poll, also got a 60-yard touchdown pass from Travarrus Marsalis to Derrick Ross and a fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Mangham 46, Block 28

MANGHAM, La. &8212; In a battle of winless teams, the Dragons improved to 1-4 on the season while the Bears dropped to 0-5.

&8220;We finally got our offense going. We had about 180 yards passing and 120 yards rushing. We spread it out and tried to throw the ball,&8221; Block head coach Scott Green said. &8220;We&8217;re just still having trouble stopping anyone.&8221;

Block quarterback Matt Green completed 12 of 28 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns and was intercepted twice.

&8220;They returned an interception for a touchdown and blocked a punt for a touchdown. That&8217;s two touchdowns we gave them,&8221; coach Green said. &8220;We also returned an interception for a touchdown.&8221;

Mangham led 34-14 at halftime before Block cut the lead to 40-28 in the second half. The Dragons ended the Bears&8217; rally with a late touchdown.

Jena 40, Vidalia 14

JENA, La. &8212; The Giants improved to 5-0 on the season and could end up in the top 10 in Class 3A next week after an impressive win over the Vikings (2-3).
