PINE BLUFF, Ark. &8212; The Alcorn State Braves came out of their game at Louisiana-Monroe last Thursday feeling pretty good about themselves after playing toe-to-toe with an NCAA Division 1-A member.
That good feeling was erased fairly quickly Saturday night.
The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions jumped out to a 28-7 lead en route to a 42-14 win over the Braves.
Pine Bluff quarterback Chris Wallace completed 12-of-20 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and Martell Mallett carried 30 times for 229 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
&8220;They controlled the line of scrimmage,&8221; said Alcorn head coach Johnny Thomas. &8220;They totally dominated us on the defensive side of the ball. They ran the football well. They threw the football well. They just did an outstanding job of executing on offense.&8221;
The Braves managed 293 yards of offense while allowing 533 yards of total offense by Pine Bluff.
Mallett opened the day&8217;s scoring with a two yard run with 10:40 remaining in the first quarter, and then Wallace fired a pass to Jason Jones for 44 yards to build a 14-0 lead.
Alcorn got on the board early in the second quarter when Venard Cooper scampered into the end zone from six yards out. Jonathan Williams added the extra point to cut the Golden Lions&8217; lead in half.
However, two more touchdowns before halftime put the game out of reach early.
Tony Hobson connected with Emmanuel Arceneaux from 53 yards out early in the third quarter for Alcorn&8217;s final score.
Thomas said the game showed that the Braves are still a work in progress.
&8220;Obviously we&8217;ve got a lot of work still to be done on both sides of the ball, as well as special teams,&8221; Thomas said. &8220;We did not play well at all on defense and did not execute at all on offense. As a result, we were dominated by UAPB tonight.&8221;
With an off week before they face Alabama State Sept. 23, Thomas said next week would be a tutorial session in many ways.
&8220;We&8217;ve got to get back to the fundamental things that need to be done on offense, defense and special teams,&8221; he said. &8220;We&8217;re going back to some of the things we&8217;ve done in the past that have worked. This week is a crucial week for us in our preparation for Alabama State. We&8217;re just going to be doing the basic things we need to do as a unit on offense, defense and special teams.&8221;
