FAYETTE &8212; The Hinds AHS Bulldogs had a lot of confidence and momentum on their side going into their game with an up-and-down Jefferson County team Friday night.

After all, the Bulldogs went into the game with a 4-0 record and a No. 5 ranking in both The Clarion-Ledger and the Mississippi Associated Press Class 2A polls.

Hinds&8217; play against the Class 3A Tigers in the first half indicated that were a team to be reckoned with &8212; that was until the third quarter as the Tigers turned numerous turnovers into 22 unanswered points on their way to a stunning 42-12 win.

&8220;Definitely a big win,&8221; Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said. &8220;Our team came out and played a flawless second half. We came out slow, but Hinds has a good team.&8221;

Hinds AHS (4-1) took a 12-6 halftime lead thanks to a pair of short touchdown runs, but the second half was all Jefferson County &8212; on both sides of the ball.

&8220;Hinds had field position most of the first half,&8221; Herrington said. &8220;Three of our star linemen were out. We had some players step up in the second half.&8221;

Jermaine Clark had touchdown runs of three and nine yards and Percy Turner hooked up with Haki Reed for a 20-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter that gave Jefferson County (3-2) a 28-12 lead.

&8220;Clark came in the second half and ran with authority,&8221; Herrington said. &8220;Senior wide receiver Joseph Kemp had a big second half. He and Haki Reed came up big tonight.&8221;

Herrington said the defense was what kept the Tigers in the game until the offense got things going.

&8220;Calvin Lewis and Issac Graves had big games. Larry Banks, at 6-4 and 320 pounds, took up a lot of room,&8221; Herrington said.

Turner scored the final two touchdowns for the Tigers with a 1-yard run and a 30-yard pass to Henry Nichols.

Franklin County 21, South Pike 14 (OT)

MAGNOLIA &8212; For the third time this season, the Bulldogs had to rally late to snag victory from the jaws of defeat and this one especially sweet as they defeated the only team that gave them a loss in Region 7-3A last season.

It took two huge defensive stops &8212; one late in the fourth quarter and another in overtime &8212; to seal the come-from-behind win for the Bulldogs.

Both teams struggled to run the ball and Franklin County (4-1, 1-0) was actually out gained 288-206 by South Pike (2-3, 1-1). But once again, the Eagles&8217; inability to score points cost them the game.

Eagles quarterback Travorrious Marsalis literally had a hand in all of their scoring with two touchdown passes to Derrick Ross and a two-point conversion pass to Brinson Johnson.

Jordan Hunt scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 halftime lead. Preston Griffith scored on a 3-yard run and Jace Carlock made the all-important extra point with 6:47 remaining in regulation that tie the score at 14-14.

Jamie Collins helped send the game into overtime with an interception of a Marsalis pass at the Bulldogs&8217; 3-yard line. He returned it to the South Pike 25, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over. The Eagles tried a couple of desperation passes, but came up incomplete.

The Bulldogs got the ball first in overtime and scored on a 7-yard pass from Lee Turner to Gary Rogers.

Trinity Episcopal 56, WCCA 13

WOODVILLE &8212; The Rams got off to a good start in the first quarter and the early part of the second quarter, but they didn&8217;t have an answer for the Saints&8217; high-powered offense as the No. 1 team in Class A remained undefeated.

Stevan Ridley had 261 yards of total offense &8212; 213 yards rushing on 16 carries and three touchdowns and 48 yards passing on 2-of-2 passing and a touchdown &8212; and Matthew Freeman had four carries for 47 yards and two touchdowns.

Trinity Episcopal (5-0, 3-0) also got two touchdowns from its defense &8212; a 51-yard interception return by R.J. Fleming and a 15-yard fumble return by Mark Harveston.

WCCA (1-4, 1-1) took a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard pass from Colin Dor/ to Zack Pourciau that capped off a 12-play, 80-yard drive.

After Ridley scored on an 11-yard run that ended a five-play, 60-yard drive late in the first quarter, the Rams retook the lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Pourciau with 11:15 to go in the second quarter. That was five plays after Cody Cullen returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yard to the Trinity 40-yard line.

Tensas Academy 31, Franklin Academy 7

WINNSBORO, La. &8212; Bennett Schauf had two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing, and Bradley Sloane had two touchdowns, one on a kickoff return and one receiving, as the Chiefs finally picked up their first win of the season.

Will Ratcliff led Tensas (1-4) in rushing with 15 carries for 103 yards. Schauf had a 5-yard touchdown run and threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Sloane. Sloane also had a 75-yard kickoff return.

Zach Jones added a 20-yard field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run. The Chiefs dominated on the ground with 243 total rushing yards.

Amite County 64, Wilkinson County 0

WOODVILLE &8212; Amite County running back Anthony Cain scored three touchdowns in the first quarter as the Trojans (4-0) jumped out to a 30-0 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

Wilkinson County (0-5) took a big blow when starting quarterback Javarius Jenkins was knocked out of the game with a sprained right ankle and was replaced by Curtis McFarland.

Bastrop 56, Block 0

BASTROP, La. &8212; The Rams didn&8217;t have the best offensive performances of the season, but Jamerson Tolbert&8217;s two interception returns for touchdowns in the first quarter set the tone for the game as the No. 1 team in Class 4A defeated the Class 1A Bears.

Randall Mackey and Ryan Rawls went a combined 5-for-6 passing for 110 yards and three touchdowns for Bastrop (4-0). Matt Green of Block (0-4) was intercepted three times, all returned for touchdowns.

The Rams&8217; defense held Block to a total of 45 yards of offense, including no passing yards. Bastrop jumped out to a 35-0 lead before the first quarter was over and Block never had a chance.

Patrick Jones
