For years, we’ve griped about the little things that we drive past every day in our community that just need some attention.

Most of these things tend to focus on the boring side of the spectrum.

But the devil, as they say, is in the details and details can move a community at least a little closer to heaven-like status.

One nagging problem that has faced the City of Natchez for years is vandalism of the decorative light poles that were put in after the bluff stabilization work more than a decade ago.

The light poles along the low-trafficked Learneds Mill Road have been the targets of vandals almost continuously since they were first erected.

Casual observers would attest the poles appear to have existed longer in their damaged state than they ever existed intact.

City leaders recently said they’re mulling ideas on how to provide a more permanent fix for the battered lights. We hope they do so, even if it means spending a little money to set up surveillance cameras to nab the criminals who seem hell-bent on destroying public property.

We hope while they’re focusing on light poles, the city also works with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to work out a plan on how to fix the decorative light poles along the state highways in the city limits.

The poles seem to topple like dominoes when touched by motorists and the “stumps” that remain are unsightly.

We realize money doesn’t grow on trees, but we hope the city’s leadership can find a way to repair the damaged light poles and figure out a solution so we’re not staring at public blight six months after the repairs.
