Lawmakers must operate with all facts

Physicians are taught early on to “never do harm.” In fact, the very phrase appeared in the original versions of the Hippocratic Oath physicians take.
Humans have a natural instinct to “act” and do something when faced with a problematic situation.
However, as good physicians know, sometimes having patience and not immediately reacting is the best medicine. Acting only when you have all of the facts in front of you is generally the best course of action.
We hope that Mississippi lawmakers can keep that in mind this year as they face what will likely be a sickly state budget.
Nearly everyone expects budget cuts will be necessary this year as lawmakers attempt to balance the state’s revenue and spending.
The problem comes when you have approximately 175 legislators each ready to play surgeon.
As lawmakers begin to consider what areas should be trimmed from the budget, they must keep open minds and consider all options.
When areas for possible cutting are identified, it’s critical that they share the possibilities with the public — and with enough time for taxpayers to provide feedback, if they’d like.
First and foremost, lawmakers must remember to never do harm to the state and its people.
