FERRIDAY &8212; Despite what head coach Chad Harkins described as one of the worst weeks of practice he has ever seen and all the distractions that go with homecoming week, the Huntington Hounds still played like the No. 1 team in Class A.
Wingback Jody Cottongin, quarterback Terrance Johnson and fullback Ricky Dunbar each had over 100 yards rushing as the Hounds scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters on their way to a 48-13 win over the University Christian Flames Friday night.
&8220;Distractions were tough this week,&8221; Harkins said. &8220;We did not have a good week of practice. I&8217;m just glade we got out of there with a win.&8221;
University Christian, which went into the game with a four-game winning streak, scored first on a short touchdown run in the first quarter. That, Harkins said, was the wake-up call the team needed.
&8220;I never was really concerned that we would respond,&8221; Harkins said. &8220;I felt like we would be able to score.
While Huntington (8-0 for the first time in school history) scored mostly by way of the running game, the first score came from a 47-yard pass from Johnson to Zack Brown to make it a 7-7 game.
&8220;We&8217;ve been able to throw the ball when we&8217;ve needed to,&8221; Harkins said.
The Hounds scored 42 straight points after the Flames (4-4) scored. Johnson, who had 150 yards rushing on seven carries, scored on a 58-yard run to give Huntington a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter. He also scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Dunbar, who had 13 carries for 139 yards, had a 23-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and touchdown runs of 5 and 68 yards in the third quarter. Cottongin, who had 161 yards on 13 carries, had a 40-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
&8220;Considering how bad a week of practice we had, the players did good,&8221; Harkins said. &8220;Jody had another good game. Dunbar had another good game. We just need to get better on pass defense.&8221;
