NATCHEZ &8212; It was home sweet home for the Natchez Bulldogs, who celebrated homecoming with a 22-18 come-from-behind win over Jim Hill.
The win snapped the Bulldogs three-game losing streak, and couldn&8217;t have come any sooner for the Bulldogs, who had lacked a spark.
&8220;We feel a little better over here. We still didn&8217;t play very well, but we got that monkey off of our back so to speak,&8221; coach Lance Reed said.
Trailing 12-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs feared they would suffer another loss but rallied behind a pair of Jason Bruce touchdowns to earn the win.
&8220;We really didn&8217;t change much at halftime, they put the ball on the ground and gave us an opening,&8221; Reed said. &8220;Hustle was one of the things that we did tonight that we have been lacking in recent weeks.&8221;
Laturus Frazier gave Natchez the spark it needed by returning the opening kick of the second half for a touchdown.
&8220;We have been needing someone to step up and make plays and he was one of the guys that did that tonight for us,&8221; Reed said. &8220;That return for a touchdown gave us a little spark and set us up for the second half.&8221;
On its ensuing possession Natchez drove the length of the field and Jason Bruce punched the ball in from one yard out. The Bulldogs turned around and made the two-point conversion off of a sprint pass.
Heading into the fourth quarter the Bulldogs still trailed 18-14, but fate seemed to intervene when the Bulldogs recovered a fumble with just a few minutes left to play in the fourth quarter.
Jason Bruce played the role of hero once again, when he kept a designed quarterback read play, sprinted around the edge of the Jim Hill defense and went up 6o-yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
The Bulldog defense staved off a late scare as Jim Hill drove down the field but could not score as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
&8220;They did some things to make the game exciting,&8221; Reed said. &8220;They got to midfield and threw a double pass, where they had gotten behind our defense but the receiver&8217;s knee was on the ground when he caught the ball. It was a game of breaks, thankfully they went our way.&8221;
Next week Natchez will travel to play Forrest Hill in a region 3-5A game.
