NATCHEZ &8212; A Roxie woman was sentenced to 20 years in jail for manslaughter Wednesday after pleading guilty to murder Sept. 11.

Wanda Jane Jenkins, 36, 111 Nelson Ball Field Road, Roxie, received the maximum sentence possible for manslaughter.

&8220;Nothing I&8217;ve heard today would make me change my mind,&8221; Judge Lillie Sanders said. &8220;It was a random act.&8221;

Jenkins allegedly killed Kim Donald, 29, in October 2005. Original murder charges were reduced to manslaughter.

Jenkins said someone was trying to attack her with a bottle, so she pulled out a 9mm pistol and started shooting, law enforcement officials said at the time of her plea.

Donald was shot in the chest and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The courtroom was almost full Wednesday morning, and after Jenkins was sentenced, some voiced approval, but many cried.

District Attorney Ronnie Harper said under state law, Jenkins could apply for parole after she had served 85 percent of her sentence. The victim&8217;s family would be able to appeal parole at that time.

&8220;We are very satisfied with the result of the case,&8221; Brown said. &8220;We feel like some justice was obtained in the plea. Twenty years is pretty substantial.&8221;

Donald&8217;s mother, Geneva Foley, said Wednesday she was very pleased with the outcome of the case.

&8220;It&8217;s the best one we could have gotten,&8221; Foley said. &8220;This is the happiest I&8217;ve been in a long time.

&8220;It&8217;s a little closure. It will help us some.&8221;

Harper said the circumstances allowed for the lesser charge.

&8220;The facts of the case showed it could have been done in a heated passion,&8221; Harper said.

Jenkins said someone was trying to attack her with a bottle, so she pulled out a 9mm pistol and started shooting, law enforcement said at the time of her plea.

Donald was shot in the chest and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Jenkins&8217; attorney, Tim Blalock, was in court Wednesday and could not be reached for comment.
