NATCHEZ &8212; Students and visitors to West Primary School will soon have another way out.
After an executive session in Thursday&8217;s meeting, the Adams County Board of Supervisors gave the go-ahead to construct an additional access to the school.
Currently, there is only one way in and out of the school grounds, Lewis Drive. The planned access is a continuation of Lewis drive to meet up with Providence Road, Supervisor&8217;s President Darryl Grennell said Friday.
&8220;It will help with traffic in that area,&8221; Grennell said. &8220;Also, if there&8217;s an emergency, there will be more than one way to get in and out.&8221;
Although the school is inside city limits, the proposed access road will be in the county.
Because the county had to use the power of eminent domain to acquire a piece of land, the project has been held up in court for roughly a year, County Attorney Bob Latham said.
The owners submitted the property to be designated a state landmark, Latham said. The court postponed a final ruling until the Mississippi Department of Archives and History had a hearing as to whether or not the land would be granted landmark status.
Although it did get the status, the MDAH said if the county were to extend the road, it would not interfere with the property&8217;s status, he said.
Even though the county is still in litigation with the landowners, the project can move forward, Latham said.
&8220;In an eminent domain case, you can ask for immediate possession of land prior to trying the case to determine how much money the landowner gets,&8221; he said.
