CENTREVILLE &8212; The Trinity Saints got no break from physical football Friday night as they ran into Bill Hurst&8217;s Centreville Tigers in a grueling encounter.
The Tigers rushed for 396 yards and held Stevan Ridley to 155 yards on 27 carries, but the Class A top-ranked Saints (8-1) pulled through on the road over Class AA Centreville by a score of 26-18.
It took time running out with Centreville on the one-yard line, but the Saint defense held its ground.
Centreville took an early 6-0 lead on a one-yard run by Nick Goudeau with 10:05 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Saints owned the second quarter, though, with three scores to take a 20-6 halftime lead.
Ridley scored from two yards out with 10:11 remaining in the half, then returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown two minutes later and threw a 61-yard touchdown pass to Clint Easom with 36 seconds remaining in the half.
Centreville finally broke through again late in the third quarter when Chip Jenkins took in an 11-yard run to make the score 20-12 after a failed two-point conversion.
Ridley answered with a 74-yard touchdown run with 10:27 remaining in the game. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 26-12.
Goudeau scored from 71 yards out two minutes later, representing the final points of the game.
&8220;We were able to do enough offensively, and we made enough stops when we had to to win the football game,&8221; said Trinity head coach David King. &8220;It probably wasn&8217;t a fan-friendly ballgame. We weren&8217;t exactly scoring at will. Nonetheless, I&8217;m proud of my team. That&8217;s a good win. Any time you beat somebody going up a classification is good.&8221;
The Saints will host Porters Chapel next week in their regular season finale.
