NATCHEZ &8212; Somewhere, Bobby Marks is smiling.
Taking a page straight out of the ACCS playbook, the Dr. Frank Guedon Rebels rode to victory 22-12 over the AFLAC Green Wave in the AYA 5th- and 6th-grade Super Bowl.
Rebel running back Hunter Norris stole the show, scoring on the very first play from scrimmage on a 70-yard touchdown run to give his team a 6-0 lead. Shane Pollan scored from 20 yards out moments later, and Norris ran for the two-point conversion to give the Rebels a 14-0 lead with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Norris then iced the game for all intents and purposes with a 15-yard touchdown pass to
Pollan with only three seconds to go before half. Norris added the two-pointer to give the Rebels a 22-0 lead.
Norris said he was confident as soon as the Rebels took the lead on his opening run.
&8220;I thought we had the game in hand already,&8221; he said.
Rebel coach Dr. Frank Guedon said the goal was to take the Green Wave out of the game early.
&8220;We knew they had some big players with some good speed, but we knew if we could get them blocked we had the speed to run a while,&8221; Guedon said. &8220;We got on top right off the bat and it changed the game. We got 22 points, and they came back, but it took too long.&8221;
The Green Wave finally answered on the opening play of the second half when Kuabi Kumi scored on a 70-yard run of his own. The two-point conversion failed, cutting the Rebel lead to 22-6.
Chamberlain Graves scored on a one-yard run with 4:10 remaining in the game, but the Rebels ran out the remainder of the clock for the win.
AFLAC coach Ken Janette was proud of his team&8217;s accomplishments.
&8220;This is a bunch of 11- and 12-year-old kids,&8221; he said. &8220;For them to do this for two-and-a-half months is something special. To practice every day and still get your schoolwork done shows a lot of commitment. I&8217;m proud of them for hanging in there.&8221;
Guedon was very happy with his team&8217;s resiliency over the year.
&8220;They worked hard to improve all year,&8221; he said. &8220;We made a lot of changes, and moved guys around to find the best fit. The guys gave a lot of extra effort. I&8217;m proud of them.&8221;
Norris, who received a game ball from Coach Guedon, was just happy to walk off the field a champion.
&8220;We played our butts off,&8221; he said. &8220;It feels great.&8221;
Farmer Electrical Services 20, Concordia Bank 0
A scoreless first half turned into a runaway second half in the 3rd- and 4th-grade Super Bowl Saturday night at Trinity.
The Farmer Electrical Services Saints scored 20 second half points to take the win over the Concordia Bank Rams, led by two touchdown runs by Mark Iles.
Ashton Blanks broke the deadlock with a 12-yard run with 1:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Iles scored from a yard out with 5:51 remaining in the game, and then scored again from 15 yards out with 2:11 remaining in the game. Michael Stricklin added the two-point conversion.
Iles said he was only thinking one thing as he saw he was breaking free for the score.
&8220;Just outrun them,&8221; he said.
Assistant coach Rod Givens said the Saints had made a few changes at halftime to turn the game around.
&8220;They had our number in the first half,&8221; he said. &8220;We made some readjustments at halftime and it got us the win, but they&8217;ve played us tough all year.&8221;
Saints head coach Greg Iles was extremely complimentary of his team.
&8220;I tell you what, I&8217;ll say this: this is a great bunch of kids,&8221; he said. &8220;We&8217;ve thrown a lot of complex stuff at them. It didn&8217;t used to be like this. Now people take it pretty seriously. They&8217;ve worked hard and done a great job all year.&8221;
Concordia Bank head coach Randy Holden said the team had really turned things around this year.
&8220;Last year, we won no games,&8221; he said. &8220;This year we won four. That&8217;s a pretty big turnaround. They&8217;ve done a good job all year. We&8217;re starting five fourth-graders. The rest are third- and second-graders. They&8217;ve overcome a lot. I&8217;m really proud of them.&8221;
