MONTEREY &8212; The proposition to increase property taxes for the Monterey Fire Department passed Tuesday night, according to unofficial results.

The proposition levies a special property tax of 10 mills over 10 years to help improve the town&8217;s volunteer fire department.

Results show that 514, or 74 percent of voters voted for the proposition, and 176, or 26 percent, voted no.

The owner of a $90,000 home with a tax-exempt status will pay an extra $15 on their property taxes, and one without the status will pay an extra $90.

The department needed the funds to maintain and improve its equipment and buildings, Fire Chief Jim Graves said recently. The department&8217;s newest fire truck is 23 years old, and some of the breathing apparatuses are over 20 years old, Graves said at the time.

Some of the funds will also go toward new hydrants and water lines.

Although not all votes were in at press time, state amendments adding homesteads of certain veterans, increasing general severance tax allocations, exempting motor vehicles from ad valorem taxes and authorizing the legislature to enact laws establishing new judgeships for district courts, among others, passed.
