FERRIDAY &8212; The town of Ferriday wants to become a member of the Louisiana Main Street program.
The Main Street program is a state &8212; funded program that grants money to restore historic buildings in a designated area of a community.
Ferriday&8217;s designated downtown area includes Louisiana, Mickey Gilley and Texas Avenues.
At Wednesday&8217;s Downtown Revitalization meeting, Secretary Teresa Dennis said she contacted the Main Street program office in Baton Rouge, about an application but was unable to have one mailed to her.
Dennis contacted the program office in November.
She said the program was not granting new applications until the spring because of detail changes in the application process.
Ray Scriber, representative of Louisiana Main Street said the program stopped accepting applications from new cities wishing to join about a year and a half ago.
&8220;The Louisiana Main Street Program staffing level had gotten to a point where we could only provide money and attention to communities already part of the program,&8221; Scriber said.
According to the Louisiana Main Street brochure, there are 29 communities that are members of the program.
Revitalization Committee President Anna Ferguson said the committee would continue stay in touch with the Main Street program.
&8220;We&8217;re going to have our application in place as soon as possible, so that when they reopen the program to new cities, we (Ferriday) will be one of the first in line,&8221; Ferguson said.
In other business, committee member Lena Bateman said she would send a letter requesting the Concordia Parish Police Jury clean and spray the water hyacinths in Bayou Cocodrie, south of Ferriday.
