LAFAYETTE, La. — Natchez High’s stay at the 2011 Sunkist Shootout did not last as long as it usually does. The Bulldogs were two and done this year at the tournament at St. Thomas More Catholic High School.

Led by Haywood Register and Julian Thomas, the Comeaux Spartans rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Natchez High 69-67 Wednesday morning and eliminate the Bulldogs from the consolation round.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start on their way to an 18-13 lead after one quarter of play and a 33-27 advantage at the half. But the Spartans responded with back-to-back 21-point quarters in the second half while getting some key defensive stops in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback. Register led all scorers with 25 points while Thomas finished with 21 points and Paul Cerouen added 10 points.

Natchez High (7-8) also had three players reach double figures. Derrian Johnson led the way with 18 points, Quincy Washington scored 17 points and Dearius Griffin had 15 points. The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they host MHSAA Region 6-6A opponent Terry.

Ferriday 50, Sicily Island 44

SICILY ISLAND, La. — Freddie Gray and Charles Chandler scored 13 points each to lead Ferriday as the Trojans hung on to defeat the Sicily Island Tigers Wednesday night at the Sicily Island Tournament

Ferriday had an 11-7 lead over Sicily Island after one quarter of play and still led by four points at halftime. But the Tigers would not go away easy as they outscored the Trojans 15-13 in the third quarter to trail by just two points heading into the fourth quarter. Sicily Island was led by Javante Smith, who ended up with a game-high 21 points.

But the Trojans outscored the Tigers 19-15 in the fourth quarter to seal the hard-fought victory. Richard Jefferson had nine points for Ferriday (5-4), which will take on Tensas Parish at 6 p.m. today.

Leake Academy 75, ACCS 46

MENDENHALL — Thomas Tubby and Tristan Hernandez led a balanced scoring attack for Leake Academy with 16 and 14 points respectively as the Rebels from Madden easily defeated the Adams County Christian School Rebels Wednesday afternoon at the Simpson Academy Tournament.

Leake Academy jumped out to a 24-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and by halftime led ACCS 50-19.

Brandon Walker led ACCS (1-13) with 15 points and Justin Allgood scored nine points. The Rebels will take on the Laurel Home School Nighthawks at 11:30 a.m. today.

Wilkinson County 53, Salem 48

TYLERTOWN — Devin Voorhies finished with a game-high 16 points and Allenzae Staggers scored 13 points as the Wilkinson County Wildcats rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime and then defeat the Salem Wildcats Wednesday night at the Dexter Tournament.

Wilkinson County led 14-7 after one quarter of play, but Salem answered by outscoring the Wildcats 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 21-20 halftime lead.

Wilkinson County’s Wildcats had a response of their own with a 7-4 advantage in the fourth quarter that sent the game into overtime tied at 45. And in overtime, Wilkinson County outscored Salem 8-3.

Wilkinson County (3-9) will take on the winner of the Salem/Enterprise game at 7:30 p.m. today.

Northwood-Lena 60, Vidalia 48

SICILY ISLAND — Donte Boose finished with a game-high 21 points and Michale Layford chipped in with 14 points as the Northwood-Lena Gators defeated the Vidalia Vikings Wednesday afternoon at the Sicily Island Tournament.

The key to Northwood-Lena’s win was the second quarter. That’s when Vidalia went ice cold from the field and scored just four points while the Gators put up 17 points to take a 29-19 halftime lead. The Vikings rallied to cut the lead to four points by the end of the third quarter, but the Gators responded by outscoring them 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

Michael Whitley led Vidalia (7-8) with 15 points while Martel Wiley scored 10 points and Isiah Thompson had eight points. The Vikings take on Franklin Parish at 5:40 p.m. today.

Parklane Academy 52,

Trinity Episcopal 43

BROOKHAVEN — Tyler Stutzman scored 18 points and Zach Stutzman had 11 points as the Parklane Academy Pioneers rallied past the Trinity Episcopal Saints Wednesday night at the Brookhaven Academy Tournament.

Trinity Episcopal led Parklane 16-11 after one quarter of play and still led at halftime 26-24. But the Saints were done in by poor free-throw shooting. They were only 5-for-19 from the line, and the Pioneers took advantage by outscoring the Saints by 11 points in the second half.

Bradley Lea added 10 points for Parklane. Sky Logan led Trinity (10-2) with 10 points while Tanner Cage and Taylor Strahan scored eight points each. The Saints will take on Bowling Green School in the consolation game at 5:15 p.m. today.

Ruston 62, Block 33

WEST MONROE, La. — The Ruston Bearcats had their way with the Block Bears during the first three quarters en route to a 29-point win Wednesday afternoon at the West Monroe Tournament.

Ruston dominated Block in the first quarter and led the Bears 22-8 at the end of the quarter. By halftime the Bearcats were in complete control with a 34-14 lead and continued the onslaught with a 17-6 advantage in the third quarter for a 51-20 lead.

Block fell to 8-3 overall and will host West Monroe at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Prairie View Academy 52,

Tensas Academy 50

BASTROP, La. — Brendan Tubbs and B. Jacobs scored 14 points each and Matt Reed added 13 points as the Prairie View Academy Spartans rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Tensas Academy Chiefs Wednesday night.

Tensas Academy led Prairie View 26-25 at halftime then took a 36-38 lead into the fourth quarter. But the Spartans outscored the Chiefs 16-12 in the fourth quarter to escape at home with the come-from-behind win.

Jake Emfinger led Tensas Academy with 10 points and Blaine Fletcher had nine points. The Chiefs return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they travel to Liberty to take on Amite School Center in MAIS District 6-A action.
