NATCHEZ &8212; An alternate route to Susie B. West Primary School is one step closer to reality.

The Adams County Board of Supervisors held a special meeting Monday to vote on a bid to cut timber on Lewis Road. The plan is to extend the road to intersect Providence Road to provide another access to the school, especially in case of an emergency.

After an executive session, Supervisors President Darryl Grennell said, the board approved the only bid they received, $14,000 to cut and haul away the timber to make way for the new road.

Also in the executive session, Grennell said, a representative from U.S. Sustainable Energy Corp. presented its plans for its recently-purchased land near the port.

USSEC also requested the county lease the company the new bulk-loading facility and Lot 1 of county land, Grennell said. The board did not take any action on this, he said.

In an open session prior to the executive session, the board modified a previous approval of a $385,816 loan for a county mainframe and upgrades to outdated desktops.

Because of a mix-up, the county will now pay 4.5 percent interest on the loan instead of the original 4.33 percent.

Supervisor Henry Watts opposed the new laptop computers for Grennell and a county judge, but approved it for the mainframe.

Grennell said his laptop was intended to replace his non-functioning desktop and would allow him to bring it to the board meeting and on county-sanctioned trips.

The board will meet again 9 a.m. Dec. 28.
