NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal boys’ basketball team was tested for a half Tuesday night against CENLA Academy.

The Saints and the Lions went into the half tied at 34, but Trinity was able to pull away in the second half for a 70-60 victory.

“That was a pretty athletic team we played tonight,” Trinity head coach David King said. “That team was good. We just did enough to win.”

CENLA had success shooting behind the arc in the first half. The Lions made five of their seven three-point shots in the first half.

Trinity ran a zone defense for much of the first half that resulted in CENLA getting some good looks at three-point shots, but the Saints switched to man-to-man for much of the second half.

“We are trying to work with the zone,” King said. “In MAIS-AA we are not quite as quick as we have been in the past. But the guys just feel more comfortable in man-to-man.”

Sky Logan led the way offensively for Trinity with 15 points. CENLA had trouble controlling Logan in the paint for much of the contest, and he also was able to pull down nine rebounds.

Trae McKenzie and Garrett Vinson also reached double-figure points with 11 each. McKenzie grabbed 15 rebounds to complete his double-double.

Three Trinity players helped out with seven points each. Tanner Cage, Tommy McCoy and Carter Smith each had three two-point field goals and a free throw in the contest.

The game’s top scorer was CENLA’s Jamar O’Connor. O’Connor netted 21 points, including three three-pointers. He also finished the game with nine rebounds.

Tyris Price had a double-double for the Lions with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

King said he was glad his team got the win, but the Saints still have plenty of room to improve.

“We have a lot of things to work on,” he said. “We have the Christmas break coming up to put a lot of work in.”

Trinity improved to 8-1 with the win. The Saints will take the floor again Dec. 27 in the Brookhaven Tournament.

Trinity girls 66, CENLA 63 (2 OT)

The Trinity girls’ basketball team pulled out a nail-biter over CENLA Tuesday night.

The Lady Saints battled through two overtimes to defeat a depleted CENLA squad 66-63.

CENLA finished the contest with just three players on the floor due to several players fouling out.

Both teams finished regulation with 48 points, and both scored 10 points in the first overtime. But Trinity was able to score three more points than CENLA in the second overtime to get the win.

Trinity’s Abbey Ashmore led all scorers with 21 points in the contest. Murphy Aldridge added 13 points for Trinity, while Margaret Ward scored 12.

Rosie Woods finished with eight points for the Saints.

Chelsea Fletcher led the Lady Lions with 18 points, and Carlie Gauthier scored 14 for CENLA.
