ferriday &8212; The Ferriday Trojans outscored the Sicily Island Tigers 60-35 in the second half to win 82-50 in blowout fashion at the Ferriday High School Invitational Tournament Thursday night.
Both teams got off to a cold start early on, but after a brief scoring spurt, the Trojans closed out the first quarter with an 11-6 lead.
Things got off to a similar start at the beginning of the second quarter, as both teams struggled once again with turnovers and cold shooting. But the Trojans got a spark from Laderek Metcalf, who scored six of their 11 second quarter points to give Ferriday a 22-15 half time lead.
In the second half, Ferriday opened things up offensively by getting the ball inside and picking up several points in the paint.
The Trojans also kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the first three minutes of the second half en route to building a 45-29 third quarter lead.
The fourth quarter featured more of the same. Despite putting Sicily Island in the free throw bonus early on in the final quarter, the Trojans outscored the Tigers 37-21 in the fourth quarter to pad their lead.
&8220;We lacked consistency, but we were able to pick up some momentum in the second half by going inside,&8221; said Ferriday head coach James Davis.
Davis said he was pleased that his team was able to force some turnovers, which is something he said the Trojans have not been able to do as of late.
The Trojans improved to 4-7 overall with the win, and will face Tensas High School next in the tournament.
Upchurch led all Trojan scorers with 15 points, while Matthew Smith had 14. Metcalf and Levier Pryon each scored 13 points in the rout.
