Charlie Spiller came to Alcorn State University four years ago unsure of what his college career might hold.

Four years later, he leaves Lorman as the school’s all-time leader in receiving yards and part of the greatest wide receiver tandem in school history with compatriot Nate Hughes.

Now at the end of his collegiate career, Spiller finds himself a bit surprised at the results.

“Five years ago I never thought I’d be in this situation,” Spiller said. “I’m happy for that.”

While the Braves were unable to produce a SWAC championship during his time there, they were able to dominate two rivals that had previously had Alcorn’s number in Southern and Jackson State. During Spiller’s four years as a starter, Alcorn went 3-1 against the Jaguars and 4-0 against the Tigers.

“That was great for us,” he said. “I was born and raised near Baton Rouge, so beating Southern was big. We’ve never done well against Jackson State, and I don’t know if anyone since (Steve) McNair has beaten them four straight times. That’s something I can brag about.”

Other individual highlights, besides the numerous Alcorn records he now holds, were also a big part of Spiller’s time in college.

“Beating Southern my freshman year and catching that game winning pass (was nice),” Spiller said. “That was their only loss that year when they won the SWAC championship. Those two kick returns to tie the SWAC record against Valley two years ago. Also, being named ESPN’s Big Man on Campus my sophomore year after I had 200 yards receiving against Alabama A&M.”

The Wilkinson County High School graduate said his time in the classroom and on campus also made the last four years unforgettable.

“On campus, I’d rate it as the best four years of my life,” he said. “I finished school and had a great career.

“I think the coaches and everybody gave me a fair shot. I took advantage of it and if I had to do it all over again, I would.”
