Porters Chapel and Adams Christian had the look of two struggling basketball teams Friday night.

Shots were missed, balls were dribbled off feet or thrown out of bounds, careless fouls were committed. In the end, though, one team had to win and it turned out to be Porters Chapel.

Jermaine O’Conner had 16 points, 18 rebounds and five blocked shots, Brad Pennington and Matt Cranfield scored 13 points apiece, and PCA (6-7, 2-3 District 4-AA) earned a 58-49 win.

“This has been hard for us to get into a basketball rhythm,” said O’Conner, one of six PCA players who were with the football team until late November.

“Little bit by little bit, we’re starting to pick it up. We played pretty good tonight.”

Luke Brumfield led ACCS (4-15, 0-4) with 27 points and was 7-for-9 from 3-point range. It was a rare display of outside shooting for Brumfield, who said he’s usually more of a penetrating scorer.

“That’s the first few threes I’ve made all year,” Brumfield said with a laugh. “They were playing tough defense inside. I was more open tonight than I had been.”

Brumfield hit 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left in the first half to put the Rebels ahead 27-25, and scored 16 of their 22 points in the second half — 12 of it on four 3-pointers. Unfortunately for the Rebels, that was about all they had going.

PCA opened the second half with a 10-0 run to regain the lead and never trailed again. O’Conner’s inside play helped PCA stay in front in the third quarter, and a series of jumpers by Pennington and Cranfield, along with nine second-half points by Spencer Pell, kept the Eagles in front late.

“We just said we’ve got to play,” O’Conner said. “We know we can beat a lot of these teams if we just play aggressive defense and don’t foul.”
