Southeastern Louisiana shuts out Alcorn on frigid day in Natchez

A chilly day at Chester Willis Field kept the Alcorn State bats cold Wednesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said of the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.
The Lions (3-1) took a 12-0 victory over the Braves (0-1) in the first of 21 home games expected to be played in Natchez this season.
After getting through a shaky first inning with little damage done, the wheels came off for Alcorn pitcher Darryl Jordan. Five runs scored in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run moonshot by Southeastern’s Casey Summerlin.
Jordan (0-1) would be chased out in the third inning after being hit in the leg by a line drive from Lion catcher Matthew Schexnayder.
The story was entirely different for Southeastern pitcher Adam Jones (1-0), a Jena graduate, who pitched five innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only four hits and striking out four.
Three more Braves pitchers were unable to stop the Lion onslaught, as Southeastern Louisiana racked up eight hits.
Alcorn head coach Willie McGowan, in his 34th season at the helm, said he isn’t worried about the poor showing in the Braves’ first outing.
“It was the first game, so we looked at some things,” McGowan said. “That’s why we sent so many pitchers in there. We’re better than what we did today. I’m not going to blame the weather, they had to play in it, too.”
Southeastern coach Jay Artigues was happy to see his team respond well after taking two of three from Tulane over the weekend.
“It was really big coming here after some emotional games against Tulane and getting a win against a scrappy Alcorn team,” Artigues said. “Coach McGowan always has a strong team and this team will make some noise this year.”
The Braves will have a week off before traveling to Grambling State for a doubleheader next Wednesday.
Alcorn is scheduled to return to Natchez for a three-game series with Lipscomb March 9-11.
