Garden club to give a facelift

Spring is just around the corner, and the Vidalia Garden Club is looking forward to planting some fresh blooms in front of one local business.
Now in its second year, the club plans to take on the Community Facelift Project, in which a landscaping makeover will be given to one local business. Any business in Vidalia may enter the contest by contacting a member of the garden club.
Teresa Dennis, chairwoman of the facelift committee, said she enjoys being a part of the project because it helps the community.
“(This project) enhances the community by getting travelers to notice a store that has been in business for years,” she said.
“By doing something new, it will draw people in and get new customers. It’s a marketing tool to help a business get noticed again. It also motivates other businesses to see if they can do anything to help beautify and pull people in off the street.”
Dennis said that so far, three businesses have been nominated, and that the garden club would choose a specific design for the business that is chosen.
“The flowers and things we plant are dependent upon this business. We have to look at what kind of plants need sun, what kind need shade. We draw up a specific design for the area. If a building needs a little extra to make it attractive, we may consider going the extra mile to get sponsors to help us with the project,” she said.
The deadline for nominations is Feb. 28, and the garden club has reserved April 13-14 for planting the tailor-made design for this year’s winner.
