MPSA class tournaments are set to begin this week, and five Miss-Lou teams will represent the area looking for state championships.
The Huntington Hounds and Trinity Episcopal Saints will be in the boys Class A tournament at University Christian School in Flowood.
Huntington (29-3) will open play Wednesday, when they take on Immanuel Christian School at 2:45 p.m.
After a disappointing finish to last season, head coach David Boydstun said Huntington will be looking to come home with a championship.
“(The team) was ready to go back,” Boydstun said. “They’ve been talking about it since the start of practice. We feel confident we can go and represent our district well. Maybe we’ll come home with something.”
Trinity (13-11) will take on Bayou Academy Tuesday at 5:15, and head coach David King said the Saints were excited to be there.
“We’re pleased to go home with the No. 2 seed in the South,” King said. “If you’d told me in November we’d be the No. 2 team in the South I’d have jumped at that.”
On the girls side in Flowood, Trinity Episcopal and Tensas Academy will begin their quests for a state championship.
The Lady Saints (14-15) will take on DeSoto School Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Head coach Melanie Hall said her team has faced plenty of competition to be ready for the state tournament.
“I feel like we’ve seen anything we can possibly see,” Hall said. “Our tough schedule helped us. I feel very confident. I’m excited for our kids. They’ve done a beautiful job of playing hard, playing smart and having fun.”
Tensas (15-19) will face Bayou Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
In Class AA, the ACCS Lady Rebels will open play Tuesday at Brookhaven Academy for the state tournament.
ACCS (31-10) will face Delta Academy at 4 p.m.
