Despite having just one extra-base hit the entire ball game, the Vicksburg Gators showed why they are the 10th-ranked team in the state as they defeated the Cathedral Green Wave 16-8 Tuesday night.
Stanley Bufkin had a double for Vicksburg, which ended up with 12 hits and took advantage of four Cathedral errors to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Vernon Wolfe led the Gators at the plate by going 3-for-5 while Stanton Price went 2-for-4. The Gators opened up a 6-1 lead at the end of the second inning and then added two more runs to increase their lead to 8-1.
Cathedral (2-1) cut the lead to 8-7 by scoring six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Patrick McDonough hit a home run and Preston Edwards added a triple and just like that the Green Wave was back in the game.
Unfortunately, the Green Wave gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the bottom of the sixth.
Braxton Fondren and Jesse Morrison each went 2-for-4 to lead Cathedral.
Franklin County 8, Wesson 6
MEADVILLE — Colton Laird struck out 10 batters and allowed just two earned runs in seven innings as the Bulldogs held on for a two-run win over the Cobras Tuesday night.
Franklin County appeared to have control of the game when it scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead. But Wesson wouldn’t go away without a battle.
The Cobras scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make an 8-5 game and scored another run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 8-6. But Laird made sure that would be as close as Wesson would get.
Dane Hodges had a big game at the plate for Franklin County (1-2) as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and Ryan Ratcliff was 2-for-3.
Monterey 9, Grace Christian 7
ALEXANDRIA, La. — The Monterey Wolves started off their season on the road and held off a late rally to defeat the Grace Christian Warriors 9-7 Tuesday afternoon.
Landon White, Trey King and Ross Lipsey provided much of the offense for Monterey (1-0) as each of them went 2-for-3 at the plate. White hit a home run and King had a double for the Wolves.
The Wolves scored four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead, only to watch the Warriors respond with three runs in the bottom of the third to trail by just one run.
Monterey answered by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth and one run in the top of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead. Grace Christian tried to rally again, but its three runs in the bottom of the sixth was not enough.
Losing pitcher Jay Salter led Grace Christian at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double.
Central Private 9, WCCA 0
CLINTON, La. — After going 9-0 last season, Cade LeBlanc picked up where he left off as he pitched a one-hit shutout to lead the Rebels to another impressive win over the Rams in six innings Tuesday afternoon at the Silliman Tournament.
