Despite being out-hit six to four and giving up three home runs, the Jena Giants took advantage of five Vidalia errors to defeat the Vikings 6-5 Monday night.
“We left a lot of base runners on,” Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “We didn’t hit very well. We didn’t pitch very well. Our defense — five errors says it all.”
Vidalia (4-1) had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning and a 3-1 lead after two innings. Unfortunately, the defense let the Vikings down.
Jordan Brewer, Trey Brasher and Nick Coley each hit a home run for Vidalia. However, they were all solo home runs.
Clay Talley provided much of the offense for Jena (1-1) as he went 2-for-3 with a double.
Block 11, Downsville 4
JONESVILLE — John Davis, Casey Ryan and Justin Winborned combined to pitch a two-hitter while Block’s offense had its best game in head coach Scott Green’s tenure as the Bears defeated the Demons Monday night.
This was no regular win for Block. The Bears defeated the No. 8 team in all of Class B and did so in decisive fashion with a good mix of hitting and pitching.
Davis pitched the first two innings and was credited with the win. He allowed no hits and struck out three. The trio of Davis, Ryan and Winborne struck out a total of 14 batters.
On the other hand, losing pitcher Matt Johnson lasted just one inning – the first inning. Johnson gave up six runs on five hits and two walks and the defense didn’t help him out by committing two errors.
“Almost every starter had at least one hit,” Green said. “This is the best game we’ve had in my two years here.”
Matt Green went 3-for-3 with a double and one run batted in. Derek Adams was 1-for-3, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Evan White was solid as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Amite School Center 9, WCCA 2
WOODVILLE — Amite School Center took advantage of WCCA’s miscues. The Rams, on the other hand, were not able to capitalize on the Rebels’ defensive blunders.
The combination of a one-hitter by Kelton and seven errors by WCCA enabled the Rebels to defeat the Rams Monday night.
Amite School Center led the entire ball game despite committing six errors of its own. WCCA’s only hit was a triple by Casey Aldridge.
