NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal girls’ basketball team managed a victory in a sloppy contest that saw more turnovers and fouls than points Friday night.
The Lady Saints hosted Tallulah Academy and pulled out a 28-17 win that left a lot to be desired for head coach Richy Spears.
“I don’t know what to say,” Spears said after the game. “Eventually, we have to make some shots and take advantage of our looks.”
With the Lady Saints not putting up many points on the offensive end, they were forced to win on the defensive end.
Trinity used an aggressive defensive effort to force Tallulah into bad shots and turnovers the entire game.
Trinity’s aggressiveness got the team into foul trouble, however, and Spears said that was another factor that contributed to the Lady Saints never getting into a rhythm.
“We got in the double-bonus early, and that caused the sloppy game,” Spears said. “Our technique has to get better, and we have to get better with our feet.”
Trinity was able to put together a good third quarter after taking a 10-7 lead into the half.
The Lady Saints scored 16 points in the third to take a 27-12 lead into the final period.
Spears said the team did not make any drastic changes at halftime, but they started to take advantage of their open shots.
Trinity’s Abbey Ashmore and Mallory Lancaster both scored seven points to tie for the team lead.
Patsy Coffey added six points, all of which came in the third quarter, and Margaret Ward scored five points.
Kathleene Oliver was the star for Tallulah. She scored eight points and pulled down 16 rebounds in the loss.
Spears said the loss would show his players that they must focus on execution on both ends of the floor.
The win gives Trinity a 4-2 record on the season. The Lady Saints will face Oak Forest today at Trinity with games beginning at noon.
Due to an early deadline Friday, the results of the Trinity boys game were not available at press time.
