Madison-Ridgeland Academy dominates Trinity Wednesday

Trinity Episcopal head coach David King may have found the best way to describe the disparity between his Saints and the Madison-Ridgeland Academy Patriots.

“They were bigger than us, but we were slower,” King said.

The Patriots used their advantages to perfection Wednesday afternoon with a precision offense and tough defense to take a 63-35 victory in the second round of the MPSA Overall Tournament at Mississippi College.

The Saints shot just 12-for-43 from the field — a 27.9 percent clip — as compared to 51.9 percent shooting from MRA, an almost exact opposite performance from Trinity’s victory over Marshall Tuesday.

Perhaps the biggest difference, however, came in the paint, where the Patriots outscored the Saints 42-22, aided by their height advantage.

“There was no match-up we could take advantage of,” King said. “Our only chance would’ve been to hold (the ball) from them, but we weren’t able to do that.”

Matthew Freeman and Stevan Ridley led Trinity, scoring 10 points apiece. Brandon Bolen was the only Patriot to score in double figures, with 13.

The Patriots led by as many as 35 heading into the fourth quarter before bringing in the backups.

Despite the loss, King was happy with his team’s performance throughout the season.

“We weren’t supposed to make it to Overall,” he said. “We weren’t supposed to make it to state. We were undermanned even against (Class) A schools, so we knew we’d be undermanned against (Class AAA) schools. We were kind of a feel good story. I’m proud of the effort these kids gave all year.”

Trinity finished its season with a 17-14 record.

The Patriots (34-4) will take on Huntington (34-4) Friday at Jackson Prep, where the overall tournament will move due to Mississippi College hosting the NCAA Division II regionals.
