In a game that had almost as many total errors as there were total hits, the ACCS Rebels jumped out to a big lead only to hold off a late rally by WCCA to defeat the Rams 12-9 Friday night.

The game was originally scheduled to take place at ACCS, but because of a scheduling conflict, the game was moved to WCCA.

Luke Brumfield led the Rebels’ offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Eric Perry went 2-for-4 with a double. ACCS also took advantage of seven errors committed by the Rams.

“They hit the ball well tonight,” Rams head coach Ray Olive said. “When you make seven errors, you’re not expected to do too much.”

Brennan Bush had a solid game at the plate for WCCA as he went 3-for-4 with a double. The Rams out-hit the Rebels eight to seven, but both teams combined for 12 errors.

ACCS (1-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before WCCA (2-4) tied the game with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. After a scoreless second inning, the Rebels took the lead for good with one run in the top of the third.

Then it appeared that the Rebels were on their way to ending the game early as they scored five runs in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the fifth to take a 12-3 lead.

But WCCA wouldn’t go away quietly – not by a long shot. The Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the sixth to trail 12-6.

“I thought we hit the ball well,” Olive said. “What I stressed to them is to compete throughout the game. I thought they picked themselves up after the third, fourth and fifth innings.”

ACCS was held without a run in the final two innings and then saw WCCA score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 12-9. However, that would be as close as the Rams would get.

Cathedral 11, Bogue Chitto 0

BOGUE CHITTO — Preston Edwards had a big game on the mound and at the plate as the Green Wave defeated the Bobcats in five innings Friday night in a Region 7-1A game.

Edwards held Bogue Chitto to just two hits, struck out 11 and walked none in a complete-game win. He also went 2-for-2 with both hits being home runs as the Green Wave pounded out 10 hits.

David Ozburn went 2-for-3 with a triple while Braxton Fondren had a double and went 2-for-3. Cathedral (6-1, 2-0) ended the game early by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Bogue Chitto couldn’t get a runner to score even though the Green Wave committed three errors. M. Martin took the loss for the Bobcats.

Block 19, Weston 4

DOWNSVILLE, La. — The Block Bears scored at least three runs in four of the five innings as they used a 16-hit attack to down the Weston Wolves Friday afternoon at the Downsville Tournament.

Evan White hit a home run, Justin Winborne went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs batted in and Derek Adams was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs to lead Block at the plate.

Casey Ryan pitched all five innings for Block (4-3) to pick up the win. Ryan held Weston to two hits, struck out seven and walked five. He also went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Block will take on defending Class C state champion Marion at the Downsville Tournament today at 11 a.m.

Natchez High 16, Ferriday 15

NATCHEZ — Desmond Smoot’s game-winning, two-run single gave the Natchez High Bulldogs a win in the eighth inning in a game that lasted well over three hours.

The Bulldogs took a 13-8 lead over the visiting Franklin County Bulldogs with a six-run fifth inning, but the lead was short-lived, as Franklin County took a 14-13 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Cameron Logan took the win at pitcher for Natchez. Blaine Abernathy was saddled with the loss for Franklin County.

In addition to taking the win on the mound, Logan had a home run, a double and a triple in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.

The win improved Natchez High’s record to 5-3 on the season.

Vidalia takes two at Pineville Tournament

PINEVILLE, La. — In his first start of the season, Jordan Brewer pitched a shutout as the Vidalia Vikings defeated the Class 3A Buckeye Panthers 13-0 in five innings Friday afternoon.

Vidalia’s second game of the Pineville Tournament was a lot closer, but the Vikings (6-1) held on for a 5-4 win over the Class 4A Live Oak Eagles. Trey Brasher picked up the win to go to 2-0.
