VIDALIA — The Cathedral Lady Wave have already wrapped up a Class 1A playoff spot, but the last couple weeks of the season are still important for the Wave to sharpen their game.

And if Monday’s game against Vidalia was any indication, Cathedral should be ready by the time the playoffs get here.

Pitchers Mollie Devening and Ginny Daggett combined for a no-hitter and the Green Wave batters rapped out 14 hits as the Wave blew out the Lady Vikings 13-0 in five innings.

“We’ve been playing well lately, and it showed today,” Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell said. “We’ve been working on being aggressive, and that’s what we did today. It was a real well-played game. I’m proud of them.”

While Cathedral piled up 13 runs in the game, the Lady Wave only needed to plate one thanks to the dominating pitching performance they got.

Devening pitched the first four innings without allowing a hit and Daggett finished the game off with a one-two-three fifth inning that ended the game.

“Mollie and Ginny have been pitching real well lately,” Blackwell said. “It’s good that we can use them both any time we need to.”

Cathedral got on the board with a run in the first inning, but really put the game away in the next three frames.

The Lady Wave scored three runs in the second inning thanks to a two-run single by Shannon Mire and an RBI single by Kimble Devening.

Cathedral added three more runs in the third inning thanks to a two-run triple by Beth Fortenbery.

Fortenbery then scored by way of a groundout by Shannon Mire.

After Vidalia went quietly in the bottom of the third inning, Cathedral put the game away with six runs in the top of the fourth.

Mollie Devening and Melissa Cavin had RBI singles in the inning while Mackenzie Watts had a two-run single.

Two more runs scored on a Vidalia error.

The Lady Vikings put runners on first and second with one out in the fourth inning, but shortstop Ginny Daggett turned a nice unassisted double play when she scooped up a grounder, tagged the runner going from second to third and stepped on second base to force out the runner moving from first to second.

Daggett then pitched a perfect fifth inning to close out the game and improve Cathedral’s record to 12-8.

“We’re just working to keep getting better and be playing well when the playoffs get here,” Blackwell said. “If we play like we did tonight, we’ll be alright.”
