Green Wave shuts out Jena

Patrick McDonough was one out away from a no-hitter as the Cathedral Green Wave rebounded from a poor showing Thursday to shut out the Jena Giants 6-0 Friday.

McDonough allowed no hits through five and two-thirds innings before Jena’s Newt Ashley ripped a two-out single to break up the no-no.

Outside of that, things were relatively rosy for the Green Wave, the opposite of Thursday night’s rough outing in a 5-1 loss to West Feliciana.

“I knew we’d come out more mentally ready to play,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “We talked about what went wrong, and I knew we’d come out more focused.”

The Green Wave jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of their second Vidalia Baseball Classic game with a sacrifice fly by Preston Edwards and a two-run single by David Ozburn.

They scored three more runs in the third inning, helped by a Jena error.

McDonough picked up the win at pitcher for Cathedral (8-2) with a one hit, 10 strikeout performance. Jerrod Moss took the loss for the Giants.

Kole Junkin had a double for Cathedral.

The Green Wave will play again today at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the 9:30 a.m. game between False River and St. Joseph.

“I’m hoping to see a big game out of Cole Mann,” Beesley said. “This is going to be his first varsity start, and I want to see if he can come out and throw strikes.”

In earlier action Friday, Pineville beat False River 6-1 and Springhill topped St. Joseph 12-2.
